Thanks for the info. I'd thought about watching more of Gundam, but it's pretty daunting with all the episodes. I might do a series here and there to start chipping away at it.

A good place to start for the Universal Century timeline is 0080: War in the Pocket. It's only a few hours long, and, even though it's a side-story, it gives you a good flavor for the universe.

The main series gets a little more crazy, since it consists of 3 series that are each quite long, and a couple movies that take place afterward. If you want to go into that world, the original Mobile Suit Gundam series is obviously the place to start, and is around 40 episodes. Alternately, it was compiled into three movies, which is actually the way I'd recommend watching it.

Unfortunately, I don't think any of those are legally available to stream anywhere, and I also don't think they're in print on DVD/Blu-Ray either, so...yeah.

I just started to watch this, and while I haven't watched anything beyond in regards to stuff in this universe (I caught about 20 or so episodes of the original MSG years ago), I should be able to enjoy this as a stand-alone series. I'm watching this dubbed, BTW.

Episodes 1 and 2

"Audrey" made quite an appearance there with her mission being to stop a war from happening. Banagher is just saving a girl who has been drifting off in space, and he ends up being caught up in something big. Some big things are about to go down and next time, Banagher gets his Gundam.

Thanks for the info. Will be good to get this going as I am a Gundam noob but also really enjoyed these 2 episodes. So it will be great to get more context.

Rightstuf and Sunrise have been releasing many of the older gundam series on DVD/Blu-Ray recently. Mobile Suit Gundam (TV series) was fully released in December and the Movie trilogy was released in January. Zeta Gundam was just fully released about a week ago and ZZ is coming out in June/July.

They still don't have streaming though.

I thought they were planning to release them, but I didn't know they'd already been released. Shows how much I've been paying attention to physical disc releases lately, I suppose.

The appeal of this TV version of the series is clear for me: Those OAVs can get pretty expensive, as well as hard to find. This way, a lot more people can get into Unicorn at a much lower entry cost, even if there's very little new content added. I'm absolutely okay with that, and I hope a bunch of new fans get on the bus here.

This. Ive tried collecting Gundam series over the years but weve effectively been getting shilled since Gundam 00 series 2 in the pricing/release format. Glad to see theyre embracing streaming again.

As for series... i dropped it after 3rd OVA, it wasnt grabbing me enough to justify costs. I'll get back to it on here when im caught up on other stuff on queue, having whole series on CR may even help me enjoy it more.

I want to watch Gundam 0096 from the original Blu-rays, But I didn't think the show had any subtitles.

I watched almost all Gundam shows except for Victory Gundam and Gundam 00.

I'm glad they're releasing older Gundam shows on right stuff. I waited for so many years to see Gundam X.

Are there other threads I can talk about Gundam?

This Unicorn Remix

Chief Director: Kazuhiro Furuhashi
Screenplay: Yasuyuki Muto
Music: Hiroyuki Sawano
Original creator:
Hajime Yatate
Yoshiyuki Tomino
Original story: Harutoshi Fuku

But the originally an OAV back in 2010 with 8 episodes...
thats why I thought wasnt there a Unicorn series a while back.

I though I was going nuts...
This story line is similar to the others except for Blood Orphans . I like the perspective of the workers.

This one requires some prior knowledge of Gundam canon to fully understand to be honest. It doesn't stand up that great by itself.

But this takes place in the main Gundam canon timeline ( Universal Century ) so this story is built on the history of several prior series. Specifically the original series in the 70s and the follow ups in the 80s and early 90s. Unfortunately this will rear its ugly head more and more the further you get into Gundam Unicorn as focus moves away from Banana Lynx and on to the some odd 3-4 different factions at play.

Much talking about politics and history will ensue. None of which will mean anything to first time viewers.
(...)

Thanks for mentioning this. I was already getting the feeling that this show isn't really working for me. I guess I'll have to leave it for now and come back once I manage to catch up with the older series. I've only seen bits and pieces of MS 08 and Wing which isn't enough to go on. IBO is a separate timeline so that doesn't help much either. Oh well, time to see what I can dig up...

Wing is its own alternate timeline as well. Its not attached to any other series. MS 08 was in the UC timeline and its about 20ish years before Unicorn. But MS was all planet side as I recall and didn't touch on much of the grand politics and history side of things.

The biggest problem with Unicorn is that ultimately its entire plot hinges on major historical events in the timeline going back, well, 100 years. If you don't know the major historical plot points or the historical figures in question Unicorn will be lost on you and the ending in particular is completely meaningless if you don't know the UC timeline well.

And I mean seriously, head scratchily meaningless. >.>

Yeah, I had looked at some other source first which gave me some confusion on which series belong where. When I checked the Gundam Wikia I noticed Wing wasn't part of the UC timeline.

Anyway, I googled streaming the UC0079 and found a Reddit that could name a site that has some serious Gundam resources so I'm going to start there. But from the looks of it, it could be a while before I get far enough to fully understand what's going on with Unicorn. I guess watching Gundam UC requires some long term commitment
