On my upteenth time rewatching Mahouka Koukou No Rettousei, and it dawned on me why this anime and series as a whole hit
Posted 4/5/16
Looking back, I was drawn in by the art style of it, and the characters developed well which kept me interested for the long haul. However, for the longest time, this series has been tied with Jigoku Shoujo as my absolute favourite anime, and series in general, of all time, but until now, I was unable to explain WHY it struck such an emotional chord with me.

Tatsuya. His history and development as a character made a massive impact on how I treat others as a whole. I have always felt like a red thread of destiny ties him with Mayumi Saegusa, and here is where the feels hit me HARD during this revisit to the anime, but I have had until this point, difficulty explaining my view on why, so here it is, be aware that from here on out, there will be spoilers, so read at your own risk if you are not familiar with the series:

The author will not go the incest route. Mayumi is the only remaining prospect who has any actual, genuine character development and connection and bond with Tatsuya.

This here ends my long post, so feel free to voice any opinions or thoughts on the matter, as I have voiced mine here.

Just going off of the show, he was told to marry Mayumi in order to place him under the control of a Family, since he appeared to be a wildcard too powerful to ignore. That doesn't really change much, but it is a thing to note. Mayumi is probably the only one of high enough status to even be a match for his perceived level of power.
I was pretty sure it was more or less implied that he could not form deep relationships with others due to Miyuki, though, because of her acting as a limiter on him.

Pretty much. To date, Miyuki is still the only girl he is able to display his natural human emotions for. Sure, there's plenty of development between him and Mayumi throughout the LN, but it still doesn't change the fact that he's unable to experience anything more than mild lust, love, desire, etc since things of that nature were taken from him as a child. Until something changes, Miyuki is still the only person in the Mahouka universe that draws emotions out of him in a more than mild fashion.

Ah, I've only watched this about four or five times, but it has joined the ranks as one of my favorites. I like the fact that Tatsuya is totally overpowered. Most of the main characters in this type of show are wimps, and just barely get their act together by the last episode.

Another one that I've watch 5-6 times is AKB0048. I know it has a funky plot line, but I like the music, the graphics, and the general feeling of hope in following your dream that it generates. It's one show that I would totally recommend watching in wide screen blu-ray

Didn't realize the spoilers were for the novel... either that or I don't recall those details from having watched it only once. It is good enough for a 2nd or 3rd viewing though. It helps that I also like the art style and the characters along with their development and the accompanying story. I can't think of any other magical academy series that I really liked besides Index and Strike the Blood, but when I think of them, I don't have any yearning to rewatch them. Why is that..? Maybe it's because, out of those three, Tatsuya's the only MC who doesn't become befuddled when a girl crosses his path; he's also the only one with a cute younger sister who attends class with him and their relationship has some incestuous undertones; his style of dress is pretty sharp; he's only got eyes for his imouto; he's pretty kickass without needing someone to yell out advice to him from the side; imouto; and it's pretty much him who takes a hold of the show rather than sharing the spotlight.

Maybe I'll give it a watch again if there are no other series that I feel like watching instead.
