Ep 1

This was cool. The Joker Game itself is neat, and I'm enjoying the mind games that are at play here. It seems like a mature sort of drama mixed with the stylishness of a period piece. I've got some reservations about our protagonist being a bit too naive for his own good, but its too early to tell if that'll be a real issue (especially considering the situation he is in now). I'm hoping that he either learns to think on his feet or else learns that life is more than black and white. Lots of potential here.

Hmm... this one left me sort of cold. It might be because it was one of the few shows this season that I had high expectations for, but the debut just didn't totally click for me. I like the style and get what they're trying to do but it just didn't really work as well as I wanted it to. My first thought is it may be due to the lack of any really developed characters. When you don't have an anchor point it's tough to get into a story like this right off the bat. I'll definitely be sticking around for more but I was hoping I'd be blown away and I wasn't.

Well, this is a curious anime, not the least of which because it's a realistically grounded historical drama amidst so many fantasy based shows. Of course, the elephant in the room here is the fact that this is about Imperial Japan in the years before the start of World War 2. It's a subject that can stir-up a lot of passionate arguments, especial since even by 1937 Japan already had considerably oversees holdings (usually gained by military force) throughout the Pacific.

If anything, this subject is doubly sensitive today, since the current government of Japan is seeking to revise the laws governing the deployment of the Self-Defence Force, inciting mass-protests around Japan in response as a result. So, I think this is a bold and ambitious anime, although I’m wondering whether I should treat this show with all the due care afforded to a hand grenade with the pin removed. All it will take is certain elements of media (both in Japan and the West) to find out about an episode they deem controversial and the anime will be hounded off the air.

Regardless, as for the episode itself, I’m enjoying this anime so far and I want to see where this show goes from this point. The quality of the animation in this episode are amazing, I’d expect nothing less from Production I.G, vibrant colours and a great attention to detail. The music is also nice; the use of Jazz really fits the era. As for the characters themselves, no stand-out members of the team yet, since this episode is all about establishing the premise. Although this Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki (the guy with the walking stick who runs D Agency) gives a vibe similar to that of Aramaki from Ghost in the Shell, which is a good sign.

Episode 2

Sakuma was quite perceptive there seeing that he knew exactly where the microfilm would be hidden behind the imperial portrait, based on the fact that the MP raided Gordon's house earlier. That oversight makes Mutou look really bad and he totally lost his mind there. Sakuma still has a lot to learn, but his perception is one thing that has proven to be a valuable asset. That was another great episode to follow up the cliffhanger in the first episode where there were facial expressions on Gordon and Sakuma's comrade to indicate that they are onto something. And that asshole Mutou is getting what's coming to him after making all of those foolish decisions.

Episode 2

That was....quite interesting actually after seeing some of the scenes again about Sakuma's role this episode.

Mutou's reaction was priceless although I don't think he'll learn this go by easily. But truthfully, I think he deserved it for being such an idiot. Good insight on Sakuma's action this episode, it shows him capable of being a cunning person.

E2

Didn't like the relatively long recap in the beginning, but it was a good episode with many interesting layers to the façade.
That hiding spot required a bit of cultural knowledge, so no chance of guessing that one :/.

I was wanting to know the background to Colonel Yuuki's apparent disability, but hey, turns out he played us all - that suave fraudster!
Sakuma showed that he actually does have a will of his own, so it was nice to see him begin to shake off the dull loyal dog attitude.

Hopefully we get to see more of the other spies' characters in the next episode.

I like this show and it does a lot right, but I'm wondering a couple things.
1) Does this show have any direction to the plot? It feels like there's no actual story. There's a chain of events that occur, but nothing that seems like it could start a longer story arc.
2) Will the othet agents get any development? Only one character has gotten a little characterization besides the MC and Colonel. Waiting to see some characterization from the other characters

This show is pretty good besides those 2 things. I mean the recaps are terrible too, but it's easy to just skip them. Also, I'm glad that they don't always leave this show off on a cliffhanger each episode. I wanna see where it goes, if it goes anywhere

Pro-tip: If you regularly deal with an underfunded spy agency you should probably watch your step.

Episode 2

Loved this episode! Great follow-up to the huge cliffhanger from ep 1. No one got fricked over this time. Well, except General Mutou.

MC was so smart putting all the pieces together this ep, I was really impressed! My opinion of him has definitely improved and it seems to be the same for the spies too, as General Yuuki even seemed interested in recruiting MC.

Can't wait for the next episode!

Interesting to see Sakuma puts the education that he received in the last episode into practice. He's definitely less annoying now that he's not just spouting the same lines. I gather that he is most likely going to take the spy training and it will be interesting to see how it conflicts with his military ideals and how he resolves that.

Hm, could be interesting. I'm glad I saw both the first and second episode at the same time. I always find an intelligent character much more interesting than one blindly devoted to their ideals.

Really happy with how much thinking Sakuma did and was cable of doing under that situation. I'm not sure if he'll entirely become a spy, but he'll surely learn more of their trade. I'm curious to see if this show will eventually span decades. In the first episode, Yuuki would mention that some of the spies would lie low in different countries and gather intelligence. That would be interesting to see. But before skipping ahead, this show is set at the eve of World War II. The agency will hopefully have matured enough to play a big role in that conflict.
