how does that even stay erect?

I believe its a combination of Sugar paste, Fondant, and finding the center of gravity for each invidual cake.

It's actually Styrofoam. Cake does not have the structural stability for that sort of art project.

But wouldn't be a cool cake though?

I'm assuming everyone here is already familiar with the Cake Wrecks website? http://www.cakewrecks.com/

Certainly it is cool as a design. It may be even possible to make something almost like it using actual cakes, even if that specific design is technically unworkable.

You probably can use actual cakes. You'll just need an object to make it stay like that.

I sort of went to school for this.

The problem is weight and structural strength. Cake is, unsurprisingly, crumbly. It's also kind of heavy. You add structurally strengthening things, you add weight. Individually, every element of the design is workable. Together, it's going to fall apart. You MIGHT get it to hold together for a few hours if you freeze it solid, or on the outside making it very, very tiny, and I'm still not fully convinced that it would hold together.

I could be wrong. I don't think I am, but the solution may be outside my current experiences.
