nah there not demons... as the story is explain in the second series Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (Kai meaning answer). the himiwa... (dont remember but the village's name) symdrome is pretty much like a disease that makes ppl mentally unstable. one of the key factors of the disease is that once its starts the person will always claw his/her neck. when keiichi had the symdrome, it was shown as a common ich on the neck... while when Rei had it, it looked like she had bugs gushing out of her neck (she's clearly imaging it though).

DMC anime sucked, D.gray man got boring, Inuyasha sucked, claymore was good but the ending was very disappointing..... Nothing really good.

Actually the Hinamizawa syndrome is more of a parasite. But it's true that they go insane and all.
