Synopsis

Nakajima Atsushi was kicked out of his orphanage, and now he has no place to go and no food. While he is standing by a river, on the brink of starvation, he rescues a man whimsically attempting suicide. That man is Dazai Osamu, and he and his partner Kunikida are members of a very special detective agency. They have supernatural powers and deal with cases that are too dangerous for the police or the military. They're tracking down a tiger that has appeared in the area recently, around the time Atsushi came to the area. The tiger seems to have a connection to Atsushi, and by the time the case is solved, it is clear that Atsushi's future will involve much more of Dazai and the rest of the detectives!

Episode 1

Gotta love Bones and their work.

The first episode gave a nice mix on comedy, supernatural, mystery and action moments along with character introductions. The comedy might throw off some people, but it was funny to me. I look forward to the mysteries and the use of supernatural powers since combining the two genres can be tough!

Looked, great, sounded great, had sardonic humor and action. I'm on board. The only issue I have is missing a lot of the cultural references because I don't know a lot about Japanese lit.

Good start.
Beautiful backgrounds, stunning water detail , and potentially interesting characters. I'm interested in their dynamics, if the comedy holds up, as I enjoy dark humour.

As soon as Atsushi said the tiger was always following him, I solved it .

Looking forward to seeing more, though I hope there isn't a power that overwhelms and renders investigations moot, although the No Longer Human ability does seem to be very strong.

EPISODE 1 IMPRESSIONS

This show seems like it has potential if it plays its cards right (man, this would have been an amazing pun for Joker Game....).

What I liked:
-The reference to the Japanese writers was interesting to see. Not sure if that'll have any other implications, but it''s fun to see references riddled within shows from time to time. Just as long they don't saturate the show...
-The humor was on point. It wasn't the at forefront of the whole time and the jokes were well placed. It had a couple visual gags and humorous dialogue that added to the characters
-Characters have great chemistry. It may sound like I'm repeating myself, but the dialogue of characters builds off of one another, which really adds to the show as a whole
-The show had a nice pace to it. The reveal near the end had a lot of well placed tension
-The animation was amazing.
-The show has a somewhat small cast, which could allow for all of them to get good development
~speaking on characterization and development, Atsushi had a pretty decent backstory as to how he got to where he was at the beginning of the episode

What I disliked:
-I feel like some of the jokes could easily get stale if they use the jokes in the same way. They almost messed up this episode, but the running gags had some differences between each use.
-Characters have one main personality trait (Dazai = suicide, Kunikida = control/organization freak) which are flaunted a bit too much. Similar idea to the humor as their personalities are what a couple jokes are based on and it's just being overused
-(may just be me but) the music takes the forefront of the sound in the show and it gets really annoying. The music is nice, but too loud and I can't hear what's characters are saying
-(personal gripe) I hope the ED and OP don't come after each other like they did in this episode. I know they probably jist did it for this episode, but it was just weird

This series could be one of the top dogs of the season. I couldn't find much wrong with it so I'm gonna hold out and see what it has to offer. I do feel like I've seen something similar to it before, but I can't put my finger on it. Either way, it's enjoyable to watch!

Ok, so if anyone else was a bit lost on the literary references like I was, this is what I've looked up so far:

Atsushi Nakajima - known for his short stories. His work Sangetsuki (The Moon over the Mountain) contains a story about a man who turns into a tiger

Excerpt: For a while, I often wondered why I had turned into a tiger; but the other day I found myself wondering why I had once been a human being. What a terrible thing that is! Soon, the human consciousness that I still have will vanish, buried beneath the ways of a beast-like the foundations of an ancient palace gradually being buried beneath the sands. When that happens, I will lose my past entirely and wander about as a raging tiger; and if I should happen to encounter you along the way, I would not recognize you as an old friend, but tear you to pieces, and devour you without a moment's regret.

Osamu Daizai - fiction writer - tried to commit suicide four times (drowning on a beach, hanging, pills) before finally succeeding in drowning in a canal

No Longer Human is his last novel and is considered quasi-autobiographical. It's about a man who holds up a cheerful façade but in reality feels a disconnect from people and ends up self-destructing in various fashions.

Kunikida Doppo - author of novels and romantic poetry - The idealistic references in the show seem to be in regards to his works being Romanticist.

Yasano Akiko - poet - Thou Shalt Not Die is the title of one of her poems.

Edogawa Rampo is famous for his detective stories.

Miyazawa Kenji - poet - Be Not Defeated By the Rain is the poem he is most known for.

So it seems like while the characters in this show have the names of the authors, their personalities seem to be closer to those depicted in their works.

That didn't take long. I am already in love with this show! From the characters, animation, sound, and set up, it has the makings to be the best this season. I am really enjoying what BONES has done so far and can't wait for more.

Daizai is probably my favorite character so far but I also really enjoyed Kunikida Doppo.

Interesting I did not know that. The only name I recognize is Edogawa Rampo due to the anime adaptation of Ranpo Kitan which was sort of a tribute to his stories.

Episode 1: Fortune Is Unpredictable and Mutable

This is interesting. The animation is nice, but that's to be expected from Bones. Looking at the OP though I think I can expect some great action from this series.

The characters are also an interesting bunch. Also the fact that they carry the names of some famous literature writers as someone has stated above, makes it even all the more interesting.

However, I did find it to be a little stale. Sure with Daizai thinking about suicide and stuff like that was entertaining, it just felt sort of bland for a reason. But it did pick up towards the latter half and got to the good stuff.

Overall it was very enjoyable and I look forward to seeing Atsushi bond with these weird people, also looking forward to the others showcasing their powers

This was an okay first episode, but I think it tried too hard to be funny. Too much time was spent on showing off the characters' quirks, and not enough time developing them and their relationships. It would be one thing if this was purely comedy, but if they in fact have a story to tell, they should have devoted more time to it.

Still the idea of literature inspired superpowers is really neat, so I will definitely try this out a while longer. It could have been a stronger start however.
