Could be interesting to see where this goes. I wouldn't say that it's trying to be too serious, but I wonder how that might affect the overall story? I like series with a supernatural twist and it does seem to have a little mystery vibe going on as they're detectives (to a degree). I really want to see what the others abilities are as the names could be something different. For example, I thought "No Longer Human" would turn Dazai into some sort of zombie creature with enhanced strength/healing (he was fighting a spirit tiger or whatever you want to call it). Maybe that's Akiko's ability . Stupid attack/ability names in half the animes... ugh.

*Edit*
The music was pretty good throughout the episode too plus the OP + ED.

The attack names are either the direct names of one of the literary works of the characters or a quick summary. So I would expect that they are all based on something within the work(s) and not necessarily something you would infer from the title. Just like the characters seem to be based on characters in the works rather than the authors that they take their names from.

The Beast Beneath the Moonlight - Atsushi Nakajima wrote a short story about a man who turned into a tiger
No Longer Human - name of a novel by Osamu Daizai
Doppo Poet - Kunikida Doppo wrote Romanticist poems. I think one his books was actually called Doppo ko
Thou Shalt Not Die - name of a poem by Yasano Akiko
Ultra-Deduction - Edogawa Rampo is famous for his detective novels
Be Not Defeated by the Rain - name of a poem by Miyazawa Kenji

I'll do more research after the next episode when I have a better idea of where this is going.

So I was wondering what all the hype was about as i was watching.

i mean i liked it. it was funny and animation was quirky and good, but i wasn't seeing anything to really hype me that much.

Then MOTHERF&*#(g tiger outta nowhere!

I'm sold. Gimme more!

Amazing OST so far too.

I loved BBB so it only makes sense I would be into this one as well...

I just hope the end of this show doesn't rip my heart out like BBB.

That was a decent first episode, but I'm not sure about the literary references in this one. If it becomes too reference-heavy I will drop it.

Finally getting around to catching up on a week of anime. Does anyone else get a hint of Durarara vibes from this? Or is that just because the suicide guy sounds like Kida? I feel like there's more to this feeling.

Ah, that explains a lot. I saw a theme in the naming of the abilities, but didn't know it was based on stories.

Ep 1

Coming into this winter season, this was my most anticipated show. The first episode felt right to me. The characters were all interesting and their myriad of powers all sound unique and exciting. The darker comedy was nice but the action and animation was even better. Kunikida sort of reminds me of Shizuo Heiwajima from Durarara for whatever reason. Excited to see how the story delivers from this point.

Tell that to the chickens.

Episode 2

Looks like our main character is in!

Some parts were weird; one being the comedy in tense situations. Despite that, the episode was alright.

I do look forward to the rest of the plot and mystery supernatural cases.

Could smell Dazai's troll from all the way into the UK!

Comedy really didn't hit me this episode - it created a very weird tonal clash with the situation, so I hope there's less of that in the future.
However, what did made me laugh out of surprise was Atsushi dropping into the foetal position with the bomb .

That post-credits scene has me looking forward to the next episode.

I for one am really enjoying this. Anything basically not in a moe art style is a breathe of fresh air. Though I see a lot of Crona in our main protag. Like just his eyes and expressions remind me a lot of Crona (though I do know it's by the same studio.) I like the comedy and the light but intensive of it. I mean we are only on episode two so it's probably going to get more serious as we go.

Episode 2: Yokohama Gangster Paradise

Dazai always be trolling though. But can you die instantly from wedging yourself in an oil drum? Or will it just be slow and painful? Or rather how long was he there for?

The comedy can work, if they plan to stay in a comedic nature, but it takes away from the seriousness unless you can do it right. I feel like it wants to be more serious than it has to be but it still wants to retain a comedic nature which can work. An example that did the right amount of comedy and seriousness would be Kekkai Sensen.

Oh so after Mitsuba graduated from Seitokai Yakuindomo she came with her unknown brother and changed her name and became a part of the Armed Detective Agency. I like her already.

Looking forward to the next episode. I would rather have them either take a more serious route or take on a comedic route, it seems lost as to what it wants to do right now but I think they should let up on the comedy during serious situations.
