Why not Gintama. That way, by the time they're legal adults, they'll have caught up to the current season.

Ouran Highschool Host Club!

It's funny, has a great plot, & lighthearted enough for any kid!

Other great starter Anime are-

-Soul Eater

-D.Grey-Man

-Watamote

-Black Butler

^That's assuming the kid's being introduced at the age 12-14 or so.

[My bad. Read that you wanted recommendations for "Toddlers" a little too late. Ha~]

If younger, I'd start with "My Neighbor Totoro", or Pokemon, or even Card Captor Sakura.

Stuff that display's good morals, or whimsy.

If I was ever to have kids, I'd show them Cardcaptor Sakura and My Neighbor Totoro. ^_^

Probably start off with a bunch of Studio Ghibli films, then One Piece, then EVERYTHING ELSE.

Chi’s Sweet World, its a perfectly simple that only 2-4 minuates long that a 2 or 3 year old would like. All I have to do is explain whats going on while s/he is being engolfed by the pictures.

Realistically, I'd probably show them a new anime that I think I would watch if I was younger.
For example, I'd nudge them into Yo-Kai Watch instead of going way, way back to 90s Pokemon.

Dragon Ball, Sailor Moon, etc. was my gen.
Naruto, One Piece, etc. are this gen.
And whatever huge shows are next, I'm sure they'll be fun too. I'm not gonna stick 300 episodes of a dated show in front of them to try and get them to relive my nostalgia, and get them to like what I think they should like.
But I'll definitely recommend them stuff if they're interested.
