Well get around to watching this when i suddenly read snippets that this was a bit different than what the description made it out to be.

Certainly has that girls und Panzer vibe to it. Girls doing cute warfare things. Until they're suddenly under fire from one of their own using live munitions and declared mutinous when they respond with force to survive.

As for why. Best guess is some kind of conspiracy really with the instructor being part of it. Guessing some plot involving the blue mermaids or something. Though it certainly came out of the nowhere. Seems planned though as the ship the instructor was using seemed largely empty with no lifeboats or anything. And she was calm about the entire thing. Thus the conspiracy guess. Which might also explain the full move into being declared mutinous rather than figuring out what was going on.

But so far. So interesting. Curious to see how the plot proceeds. But was not expecting it to get serious like that. So. So far Haifuri has managed several surprises on me. That's a positive.

Episode 1:
The instructor attacking them was very out of the blue. Could have used some subtle foreshadowing so that it was at least not so odd after the fact. The characters seem somewhat flat right now, but that aspect deserves more than one episode prior to being used as a basis for judgement. Looking forward to giving it another shot.

Ep 1

Like many, this isn't quite what I expected, not that it's a bad thing. The last half of the episode veered off in a more serious direction that admittedly has me more interested in the next episode than I otherwise might be, despite being a huge fan of CGDCT. The naval warfare, if it continues, should be pretty fun to watch. So far I like the tomboy-ish torpedo girl the best. The next few episodes should firmly set the overall tone for the series, so I hope it keeps the intensity.

Yes it is.

Ok, this plot strains credibility, even granted it's in a show about teenage girl ship crews in a 21st+ century surface navy that's entirely made up of WW2 style ships.

TBH the only thing that seemed disjointed were the yuri vibes. The ships the students are on I assume are training ships, as we saw the opening scene with the floating city-ships.

Then again, it makes sense why WWII-era ships are being used. Assuming that the biggest threats to aren't nation-states but pirates seeking to pillage or flat out take control of the floating city-ships, probably much more economical to go with those sorts of offensive ships than investing in modern carriers and aircraft.

(Assuming that the average floating city-state cannot afford their own aircraft carrier and planes).

1) I think the instructor's "calm seas don't make good sailors" is a classic case of foreshadowing.
2) Did anyone notice there are two Munatani's (family name), the principal and the deputy-captain? And the deputy-captain, when she finally heard Akeno's name paused to think like she thought maybe she had heard it somewhere before.
3) We know some of the people from GuP are involved, and a major point of that show was that Miho Nishizumi was a brilliant tank commander, she just needed it to be coaxed (and even coerced) out of her. Perhaps the same will hold true for Akeno. Even though her "grades" aren't up to captain's level, maybe something else about her shows promise (critical thinking skills, etc.).
4) I'll go out on a limb here. Maybe they need a ship and crew that are "outside the law" for a special mission (with government deniability). Thus they forced the Harekaze to do something that would cause them to be viewed as mutineers. Officially, the government will be hunting for them, but unofficially they will receive orders through back channels to undertake some special mission.
5) If it doesn't turn out to be as good as #4, they better have a damn good plot twist in store. My first thought after the first viewing (I'm up to about 5 now) was that it was a "Kobayashi Maru" type test (unwinnable scenario to test the captain). But why does (apparently) just Akeno and the Harekaze get it?

Episode 2

Mike has gotten herself into quite a big mess after making that boneheaded decision to fire back at the instructor's ship as even though it was a dummy round, the Sarushima sunk. So it's back to the rendezvous point, but they are a long ways away while the ship is in need of repairs while a German ship is firing at them. Another ship attacks, and this time they use a smokescreen and they fire live ammo for a screw shot to shake it off. Mashiro sure is down on her luck there as now, there's a distress call. Mike sure did show her resolve there to quickly turn things around. It turns out that there wasn't a mutiny, but that's what the crew of the Sarushima thought was going to happen next after all that. That was a sold way to follow up what happened, but now there's more trouble making me believe that this could very well turn into a crisis-of-the-week kind of thing.

Episode 2

The tension is high.

Looks like this is more than cute girls doing cute or cool things, which is nice. I do feel like the attack from their allies is just one big hoax to teach them something. The cliffhanger at the end makes me suspicious of that as well, but we will see.

Episode 2

This show is almost crazy, loving it though with the naval warfare.

Plus, I think the OP song and characterization so far told by flashbacks/background storytelling is interesting. Can Misaki and her crew handle the pressure? And what a cliffhanger!

That OP is really good, and this series is definitely treading on the territory of being better than it probably has any right to be. It's actually really gripping and I'm starting to like a bunch of the crew members. Not really into the technical stuff personally but I'm sure the naval and military fans are eating it up, and it's inclusion isn't really hurting anything.

This may well be one of those series like School Live that people passed on purely based on the initial art reveals where it turns out they're actually missing out on a really good show that doesn't match the pre-release impressions at all.

Episode 2: In a Pinch During Pursuit!

This show keeps the ball rolling. Loving the OP and ED. Like how they still manage to put some comedy in here, but it's not so much as to detract from the seriousness it presents.

Loving Kokou right now. Also known as the girl who acts out her fantasies. It's legit though. That's what would happen if they plead their case. She was too great.

I have a feeling the German girl knows something about this whole situation and that's why she abandoned ship. Maybe something is up with the instructors seeing as HQ doesn't seem to know what happened either.

And now her friend is in danger and I guess they weren't the only ones targeted. Orrrrrr maybe its a trap and they are just using their friendship to lure them. Excited for the next one

So now I'm wondering if the other ships were fired on also or is the distress call from the Musashi a trap for the Harekaze? Loved the battle with the German ship, but have to agree with others that their aim was just terrible! Maybe the German girl will have something add to the situation when she wakes up. Something seems wrong here. Why would the school just abandon them and not want to ask what happened? They are only high school girls. Could it be some really intense training exercise? Seems like it would be called off if the ship got too damaged though. Looking forward to the next episode to see if I get any answers.
