Since the advent of facebook/twitter/snapchat/instagram and the likes, forums have been on a decline. I, in my own short internet career, have seen many forums fall to dust. Usually some controversy arises due to some rules or the layout change and then the populace declines and eventually, the place becomes a ghost town. In case of Crunchyroll, rules are either all over the place or non-existent, and the populace too has declined. The only thing that remains is for this place to become a ghost town (at least the forums).

How long do you think MAL will hold?

I found this online, credit to them.

Are we talking about the Crunchyroll and MyAnimeList forums?
I think they'll be around for a while

When not enough people believe in it, it will pass into the darkness until one day it erupts from the shadows and takes revenge on all who have forsaken it.

I was a member of another forum community back in 2012. I noticed as the well known players beat worlds they ended up quitting the game as well as the forums. The forums then suffered a blow as lots of popular people left. I think as long as people still are willing to watch online you'll still have discussions and posters. But it all comes down to the entertaining people keeping forums alive. As long as there's entertaining content forums will flourish.

As long as anime continues to be somewhat popular in the West, CR ain't going nowhere.

As for MAL though....who knows.

Forums are definitely not in decline. Where ever you got that quote from it is definitely vague and untrue. Communities around a central hobby are huge. Not everyone uses facebook or twitter, etc. General forums such as chit-chat may be in decline because they serve no real purpose. So long as a forum has a real purpose (to bring communities together and discuss topics) they will flourish. If you can give one example of a forum that is built on a specific hobby that provides a service to that hobby please do. The only way Crunchyroll forum will die is if they stop getting new anime or if the staff themselves take the forum down to limit additional load on the servers like they do for comments sometimes.

I expect that at some point something will come along to replace CR,(perhaps an amalgamation of streaming sites). Just as streaming sites have replaced fan subs and to some extent DVD?Blu-ray.

just as streaming

Shenron: That's beyond my abilities.

Krillin: At least remove the bomb from the cute android so they can live their life in peace!!!

Shenron: It is done.
