Confirmation and other biases occur way more often, causing our own information that we acquired to "feel" to be accurate, even if it is wrong. We have become less thought provoking and more instant gratification.

And herein lies the main reason I will never own a smartphone. I'd rather not be a part of the 'zombie herd', thank you very much.

Pet rock

Eh, you kids, turning it into mythological legend about "That was what the 70's were like, everyone bought pet rocks!"

Today on the History Channel: It wasn't the rock, it was the instruction book. The 70's were really into funny novelty humor books (who even remembers the Kliban Cats? ), and you not only got a rock, you got a little instruction book of "How to Train Your Rock":
"The Stay command is easy: Put your rock down, and tell it firmly to 'Stay'. Walk away a short distance. If it stays, your rock understands your command, and will be willing to gain your acceptance.
To train your rock to Roll Over, take it to the top of a high hill..."

Now, even just on a humor level, isn't that a little smarter than, say, trying to invent DiVX?

I personally feel that the invention of these things made humanity seem less intelligent;
The car exhaust grill, the avacado saver, the ipotty, the shoe umbrella, the walking sleeping bag, the privacy scarf, the lipstick stencil, 'diet' water, and the dvd rewinder. Yes, these are all real things. If you don`t believe me, check this out.

Old folktale:
The Devil was putting out his annual junior-employee competition for best submitted ideas to destroy Mankind.
One came in with a super-nuclear bomb--"Seen it, next!" One came in with a chemical supervirus--"Cliche', the terrorists do it better!"
Finally, one employee came in with his idea: "It's a new potion, it comes in different flavors, and turns humans into animals!"
So they went to Earth and tested it on a tavern on Saturday night: After an hour, the taverngoers were all sobbing "I love ya man, let me buy you another". After two hours, they were all trying to remember the words to Louie Louie, at the top of their lungs. By the end of the evening, they were shouting "Shut up!...No, YOU shut up!", and the chairs started flying.
"See how well the Animal Potion works?" said the junior employee: "First they fawn over each other like foxes, then they all bray like donkeys, and then they all kill each other like jackals!"

Aren't you maybe giving people a little too much credit by suggesting that we were more thought provoking before smartphones were invented? I fear that confirmation bias and mob mentality are merely intrinsic in human nature, and I highly doubt that smartphones have that much to do with it.

Confirmation bias and mob mentality were for sure around for millennia, but the speed with which it happens appears to have increased dramatically. It could be more the information age in general that has sped this up, but in the last decade, and even the last 5 years, it's everywhere, and with much greater frequency. Also, I feel people can still have thought provoking conversations, but it seems that there is always the distraction of the smartphone notification that pulls people away from this conversation.
