was listening to an npr report on them the other day. sounds pretty similar to the kinda lifestyle i live. apparently hikikomori are the no. 1 cause of domestic violence in japan because a lot of them attack or kill their parents.

hmm, people turn into those 'hiki- you know what' because they know, that food, and shelter is covered, they dont have to move a single muscle to do anything, thus making them being withdrawn from the society.

I don't think people become hikikomori due to being lazy bums. It has to do with not being able to socialize with others, having parents who are capable of supporting them and having no motivation in life. Compared to Americans, who tend to kick their kids out of the house when their 18 (either by sending them to school somewhere or cutting them off completely), it makes hikikomori specifically a Japanese phenomenon.

Ouch .. I could not key search forums threads for a while and i did not know this thread existed... o well..

Anyway, there are hikikomori people really exist in "our society" and some of them are just like on Welcome to NHK, obsessed with anime and online games, they withdraw from society and stay in his/her room for life..

Some of them decide to become hikikomori because they feel really uncomfortable in public, or they were being bullied at school..

Bdw, they are not Hermits

A lot of people who use the internet have symtons of Hikikomori in themselves. People refer them as 'failures' but but you can't really say that. It's just that they don't realise the importance of life.
