*sigh* I'm not nearly as concerned about the "flat Earth theory" as I am the sheer malevolence. Priorities, priorities.

The Hebrews in the Bible already knew that the world was round, it's talked about in the book of Job and another one too.

Yeah ancient Rome was also perfectly aware the Earth was Round.

The idea that anyone ever believed the Earth was flat (not counting ignorant commoners from before modern education) is a myth partly spread by some ... I think protestant groups?... in an effort to discredit the Church of that era.

So the idea the Earth is round isn't even a western concept it's just we may have accepted it as common sense faster than some other parts of the world due to everyone developing education differently.

Same with rain.... we didn't come up with that idea either.

So that's what's really mystifying about these guys. They claim western education is bad yet the ideas they stand against aren't even western in origin. They are just making up random shit that runs counter to what western education happens to teach.

But really what do you expect from mindless propaganda? This has nothing to do with religion or Truth. It's just about them forcing control over people and looking for excuses to do so. In this case their cause is to "correct" the "lies" of "western education".

I could be wrong, but I don't think the leaders of Boko Harem actually believe the Earth is flat. If you show a person a sheet of paper with a circle on it, they would say the shape is a circle. But if that person is taken and brainwashed to believe that the one brainwashing them is a prophet in touch with the divine, and he says it is a square, then the brainwashed person will say, with absolute conviction, that the shape on the paper is a square. It's like having absolute power over a person because you aren't just controlling their body, you're controlling their whole perception of reality. Anyone controlled to that extent would have no qualms about committing any act, no matter how atrocious.

Of course, the other possibility is that they really are just idiots.

Here's Wikipedia, which I tend to trust for these things - especially in this case, as it cites a historian I like a lot: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myth_of_the_flat_Earth. Apparently the myth that the medieval church believed in a flat earth got picked up and promulgated by the anti-religion crowd in the 19th-20th century to discredit creationists.

What's strange to me about this is that the Islamic world absorbed all of Greek science through the Byzantine Empire and ended up bringing that science back to Western Europe after it was lost. So there was no point at which Greek science belonged more to the West than to the Islamic world. So why fight against it?

Lol - the holographic principle is indeed a real physical concept: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_principle. It "works" in a particular case - the AdS/CFT correspondence - but we don't know yet if our universe is an example. It does make sense from a physics perspective, as quantum-mechanical scattering says we ought to think of physical interactions in a region of space as best-defined by the initial and final states at the boundary of that region. But as of yet physicists don't get that bent out of shape about it.
