the anime movie is crap first of all. Scarlet is a bad choice. as far as the movie though, maybe it can look and be everything The Matrix tried to be

I vaguely recognised the name of the anime trending on twitter, clicked on it, and saw what the big deal was. I don't think this is an issue of whether or no Johansson will play the role well or not; it's an issue of not casting an Asian actress as an Asian character. From what I've read, the Asianness (fuck it, I'll make that a word) is an important part of the story, so why remove that?

Again, I'm not familiar with the anime/manga, and looking it up, I believe it's set in Hong Kong? So, I can assume there'll be, or should be a strong Asian presence in the movie, so why cast Johansson? Because she's a big name Hollywood actress, and everyone knows her name? I'm sorry, but I really don't agree with that line of thinking. Not only does it step on prospective actresses of the appropriate ethnicity for the role, but I feel like it will diminish the overall experience, especially for fans of the anime/manga.

I mean, Dragonball Evolution was the first thing to come to mind, and even with Goku being a grey area, being an alien and all, him being cast by a white actor was questionable, to say the least. Not that that was the worst thing about that movie.

If nothing else, all this controversy makes me want to go and watch the old anime. It's probably better than the movie will be, in all likelihood.

It's going to be absolutely terrible. I've never seen Scarlet Johansson act well. That doesn't mean she can't, just that I've never seen it. There's simply no way that Hollywood will ever try to stick to the source material and actually attempt to capture the Major properly. Scarlet Johansson will probably try to Black Widow it. I can imagine them having the Major spout some terrible one-liners now. It makes me want to cry tears of blood. If Hollywood can't even remake 60's cartoons with zero plot acceptably what in the world would possess them to think that they could make a decent version of GITS?

Primarily set in the mid-twenty-first century in the fictional Japanese city of Niihama, Niihama Prefecture

The Major is a cyborg so they can sort of explain away the race thing that way. But I definitely would have preferred somebody Asian or at least somebody with talent.

I'm worried she's not playing Maj. Kusanagi, she's playing Lucy and the Black Widow with Maj. Kusanagi's haircut.

The Asianness is really not such a big part of the character in the movies (can't say for sure about the manga, but I think we can both agree the filmmakers probably don't care) The thing with the movie and TV series was that you had characters of different ethnicities. While the major looked kind of like a typical anime character leading to a bit of ambiguity about her ethnicity, plus
Characters like the section 9 chief are definitely asians, but you have other characters like Togusa who look pretty darn american.

That being said of course Johansson was cast solely because of her big name status. This movie is going to need every bit of recognition it can get to make it's money back, because I doubt the reception will be very favourable.

Oh yeah, I'm sure that's why she was cast, too. What I meant, but worded poorly, was that I don't agree with Hollywood casting actors in movies just because they're big names, even if they may not be that appropriate for the role.

If the "Asianness" isn't that big a deal, then that may make it a little more okay, but like you said, that probably didn't even cross the minds of the filmmakers, and that's the real issue, because they'll just keep hiring white Hollywood actors/actresses to play roles that they really shouldn't be playing.

It probably won't be well received because Hollywood. I don't know the specific studio, but I did read that the director's only previous work was that Snow White and the Huntsman movie, so... high expectations? Goddamn it.

GitS could take place in Neo New York and not really change much of anything and besides, the major isn't even human (and doesn't look asian in the anime). I don't think an actor should be chosen based on their race unless their race is absolutely pivotal (which, unless you are doing a period piece, it rarely is). I'm a big fan of GitS and I think Johnansson is probably the best big name actor for this role. I think she was quite good in Under the Skin and if they bring more of that to the role and less of Black Widow, we might end up being pleasantly surprised. I think the bigger worry should be the director who has virtually nothing in the way of experience...

But anyways, GitS is one of the greatest animated series of all time, so you should check it out if you haven't seen it.

While I do think the whitewashing of the Major sucks for obvious reasons on a pure story level I think that while the original Gits wouldn't lose much setting it in the US (well I think alot of the eastern religious symbolism will fall flat), SAC would really have to change ALOT if they tried to westernize it.

But seriously casting an Asian role as a white actor is not cool in my books. Its also really fucking dorky.

I hope they do neither the original manga, the first film or the show but instead do innocence. I mean think about it, you get like a David Lynch or a Alejandro Jodorowsky on it and they get to re-interpret all the symbolism and metaphors and shit and put their own what-the-fuck-ery into that already gleefully bizarre masterpiece.

Both would be bad in my view. Ridley Scott would be my first choice for the film given that Gits (and all cyberpunk for that matter) have been aping blade runners visuals for decades.
