LOL

Whether or not the main character is Asian or not is a legtimate concern for some people.

For some characters their ethnicity is a big part of their character. I mean, you wouldn't cast Shaft as an aboriginal, would you?

But yeah, that is not the case for Major Kusanagi, I'm just as fine with a white woman playing her as I would be with a black woman (preferably Zoe Saldana) doing it, so you would have to be an idiot to call me a "whitewasher" because of it.

Both of them wanted to do Dune, and that's pretty outside of both the archetypes you mentioned.

Plus if you re-watch the first two movies you'll see that spirituality does play a large role.

Dune is INCREDIBLY involved in western esotericism. Also as a big fan of the book Dune and of David Lynch I have to say Lynchs Dune was really bad. Like his worst film bad.

I was specifically referring to western spirituality were as GitS is more eastern spirituality.

Well yeah, obviously Lynch's Dune is a pile of shit, but again, I think there's more western spirituality and esotericism in GitS and Innocence than you give it credit for. I mean there's the Jewish Tree of Life during the climax of the first movie that gets all shot up except for the single branch representing mankind, and that's just one of the more obvious examples. While there's certainly some eastern spirituallity in GitS you can definitely see loads of Judeo-Christian imagery and philosophy at play in the films (especially innocence)

I am only familiar with her from Pacific Rim, and characters/acting was not the strength of that movie. I found her to be altogether sub par, and that was with del Toro as a director. I find it hard to believe that she would be able to become anything interesting with the director GitS has. Even in her role as Black Widow, Johannsson is a far better actor, and that isn't her best work.

I browsed the imdb page of Rinko Kikuchi and I don't really see anything standout in the way of roles. What makes you think that she would be able to pull off "complex character" better than Johannsson?

I think that's the main problem here. You browsed her works, didn't see anything you recognize and therefore assumed there's nothing standout or noteworthy about her. First of all, Rinko Kikuchi is an Academy Award nominated actress. She received the nomination for her work in Babel where she played a deaf-mute -- an astonishing achievement by itself. She's also the first Japanese female to receive such an honor in over 50 years. She has also received rave reviews for her acting in the film adaptation of Haruki Murakami's novel, Norwegian Wood, and for her role as Kumiko in Kumiko, The Treasure Hunter. Both roles I think really showcase her talent as an actress. Being able to portray those characters successfully is something not many actors can pull off as well as she was able to.

Fair enough. Sounds like quite the portfolio (and it would have helped if you included literally any of that info in your other post, but I digress). I don't think Johannsson should be written off, but from your description, Rinko Kikuchi probably would have done quite well in the role. I honestly don't think she looks the part (The Major really doesn't look at all asian to me and looks a lot larger build-wise) but she is a solid suggestion.

Keyword "some".

This is about as hilarious as when people were mad that Goku was white in a live action movie.

I don't know. Just by using Rinko Kikuchi's photo from Pacific Rim vs Scarlett Johansson's photo as the Major, I think Kikuchi looks more like her than Johansson does. That's just me. I mean, she's obviously not as voluptuous, but if that's what they were going for, I guess that's not a very good reason to pass up casting a deserving Japanese actress for a Japanese role.

EDIT:

Although I do get that Johansson having a bigger name would guarantee a better turnout at the box office, I still wish that didn't have to be the deciding factor. I honestly cannot stand her as an actress and that just ruins everything for me. It's such a bummer since I absolutely love GitS and Motoko Kusanagi.

Oh man, Pacific rim was absolutely awful, like whoever directed that movie, wow..... and don't get me started on scarlet Johnson, what a joke. Not trashing on her acting, because it's decent at best, but she just can't capture any role she is given. Something about her voice, I don't know, I tried to sit through lucy, why does Hollywood think she's that good? I don't understand it.

Yeah she can definitely have some range to her acting, and no doubt she can actually give a good performance, but it just won't work I tell yeah. There are so ooooo many other great actresses out there who can act circles around her.

Uh yeah, because that was the biggest problem with the movie.

Besides, Goku is an alien with disturbingly large eyes who lives in a country that is never fucking named. I think it's ok to be ethnically liberal with him.

Sorry I'm gonna go SJW for a second:

Fuck this movie for casting a white woman in a role that's iconic in not only in anime, but in scifi as well. WTF was wrong with Rinko Kikuchi or Tao Okamoto? Or shit, I'll even take Fan Bing Bing...I hope it bombs like the DBEvolution movie did for reals...

/end of rant

Seriously though, I don't like ScarJo. And she just looks like a cosplayer in that photo.

I expect to be slammed, because people are tired of watching POC actors get pushed aside for whites constantly. Also, after the job Hollywood did on basically whitewashing the DB movie and even the Avatar movie, Hollywood has proven that it can't handle stuff that doesnt' come from either a Marvel, DC or even a Western fantasy book like LOTR or Harry Potter.

At least they could've just shortened the Major's name...to just Major.

I fail to see the point here. Hollywood makes shit movies? What else is new? How does that tie into race of characters?

Sounds like people just need a reason to bitch at something arbitrary as is the norm this past year.
