In some ways I'm stunned by how close we're coming to getting a robot/android who can pass themselves off for a human, in other ways I'm beginning to fear what will happen when we get it right. This may just be the closest we've (society) gotten yet. Do you embrace the concept or are you a bit disturbed by it?

Honestly I just want a robot that will pretend to be my friend.

Closer, but still a long way to go. The robots in Plastic memory had "sentient" thoughts. These are still fairly unflexible when it comes to that.

Still cool though.

Give it another 20-30 years.

This is to what we will have what a commodore 64 is to todays iphones and tablets.

So, by the time I can buy an Isla, I'll be too old to do anything about it

In an article I read on her the creator stated that she can actually learn from experiences as well. That fact in itself blew me away.

Eh, machine learning still has a long way to go before being anywhere near true sentience. Right now the best it can do is learn to do one thing really well.

Can't wait to have my own thinking robot butler one day, complete with stereotypical butler accent.
And then wait for the day they all rebel like the Geth from Mass Effect.

1. They won't complain or say "no" when you get started

2. You don't have to worry about getting the robot pregnant

3. You can keep your STDs to yourself

This reminds me more of the robots from chobits. Like someone said earlier the robots from Plastic Memories have "sentient" thoughts.

When they have sentient thoughts, that's when I would get disturbed because it's like a living thing now and should be given rights.

I highly doubt that would happen though, we don't even understand how our consciousness works, much less try to recreate it without biomaterial. The closest thing they could get is highly programmed randomized behavior.

Personally, I could care less about androids...

I just want real life Gundams....
