I used to do that before I went on Crunchyroll

If their gender isn't marked, I don't identify them with any gender until it's clear.

Not really, not unless their sex isn't listed. Even then, I pretty much identify people here as borderline sexless. Except for people like PV, who I know used to list himself/herself as male. I'm still trying to figure that one out. I'm currently using a fox-thing, so it's not like my avatar is explicitly male or female. I've used the image of a somewhat-smutty male demon, too, so I'm fully aware that avatar pics aren't reliable

At first, almost always but now it's safe to assume female pic = male user most of the time. Things get tricky when they change from male to female, the avatar changes from female to male, and then they vanish from the forum's existence...

I do, especially in games. If their character is female then i'll assume they're female, at least in here it's usually on display.

I don't assume any gender regardless of picture. Unless their gender is specifically stated, it's easier just to pretend that nobody has a gender and use gender-neutral language.

there are no "gender neutral" terms when referring to people in the English language. saying "they" or "them" is grammatically incorrect when referring to just a single person because those pronouns are plural.

for whatever reason people just don't get that

the only singular "gender neutral" pronoun is "it" and as far as i know a person is never referred to as an "it". unless of course you're from the Addams family

well there's also "you". let's just start calling each other "you"

Yeah if they don't have their gender marked then I do. Or until I see them post something that would suggest otherwise

I generally just assume male unless I am told otherwise explicitly. Oddly enough, I was mistaken for female online rather frequently when I was young - despite never playing female characters in online games, or using female profile pictures on forums.

Ehhhhh kinda? I mean I don't normally think about it ya know? I don't usually have a reason to wonder the gender of the others. I just kinda vaguely assume their gender, but if I'm wrong I'm just like whatever. I usually use a male picture so I can't really say anything ya know?

There one I thought was female due to female picture at top left, and I have male profile and I assumed everyone know I'm male.

But I found out She is a He! =0 I was like why did you have female picture?

I was wondering do you also Identify them this way?

I'm not like PV, looking around for female to add them to friends list like a prevert! :p j/k

I remembered when I played online game, I was told all Female characters are Male, and all Male characters are Female! I told them that is excellent way for those who have bf/gf to have opposite Gender so that way they won't get hit on! XD Due to having jealous Gf/Bf.

That description of why people play opposite sex characters on games explains only a small part of the populace. I know artists who like recreating their own characters or in some cases just love the stunning detail on the characters. I know others who just say simply "I don't want to spend all day/night staring at the butt of someone that doesn't interest me in the slightest". I also know others who roleplay entire families of characters. They have Husband, wife, son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, even aunts and uncles creating entire lineage's of characters. My ex and I married in game (a big wedding) and created kids for ourselves to introduce to the world. I played the daughter and she played the son.

I think that's why I never judge a person by their avatar. It's become commonplace among people I know to make avatars based on characters they love despite the sex of them.

I don't think about it. I usually give the benefit of the doubt, unless I have a reason not to.

I don't agree that most female avis are male or vice versa, because there are quite a few I know are female to negate that assumption. (shrug)

I think some people have a bad case of internet insecuity/paranoia, and I can't blame them. A lot of backstabbing going around. :c

I look at the M/F display below there avatar if there comment makes me curious if it's from a male or female perspective. Also there age for curiosity on there generational context, same idea with if there from another country or state in the US. For me people's perspective is important for understanding, an makes their thoughts and comments more interesting. Avatar pic I believe is a wild card, could mean either but If I had a reason I wanted to question if the displayed gender was honest, or if theirs none displayed I would probably assume male until sufficient evidence to the contrary. Not likely I would have a reason too need to find assurance on the answer.

I assume male if answer isn't obvious because this is the internet, and this is an anime forum...

I remembered this friend of mine who is female, and she told me the moment she create her female character and log on the game, the first question she get asked by players is this "Are you really female irl?" She replied Yes.. all suddenly He asked her if she wanted to have cyber sex on webcam! She had to recheck the game twice to make sure it wasn't a porn game haha.

Edit:

I usually see them as that profile picture as I read their comments. One time there a profile picture with a teenager girl seem to be yelling.. so when I read that message, its seem to be she yelling. >.<
