Donald Trump looks like an alien. I mean he's orange for crying out loud.

It would be a mistake to assume aliens look anything like humans, though a certain amount of convergent evolution is to be expected. Certain biological the social structures are simply better solutions than others. We see this time and again on earth, where unrelated species develop near identical answers to common problems.

Life is infinitely diverse even here on Earth. That said, if we narrow it to intelligent life that builds stuff I think we narrow down a few things.

First, it would need some dexterous limb to manipulate the world around them. This means hands or very dexterous tentacles. Tentacles are less likely as they may not be rigid enough to fine work.

Second is size. It would need to be large enough to have enough blood to pump to a large brain but not too large that the body would take up all the nutrients the brain would need.

Third is some way to sense the world around it. It would need a sense of sight and this necessitates eyes. While there are diverse forms of alternate vision like a dolphin's sonar, vision is much more important for fine manipulation. That is not to say sonar would not be useful though...

Four, it would also need a large brain. How large is up for debate. Shall we say at least as large as a chimp's brain? This brain will also need lots of oxygen, so lungs would be needed.

Five, a free pair of limbs to carry stuff in. That is, all of its limbs would not be used in locomotion at all times.

Sixth, it would not be aquatic. Forging metal and using electricity gets a lot harder underwater. So a species able to advance to our level would not be aquatic.

Seventh it would need a method of communicating quickly and efficiently. While it scrawl a few things in the dirt, you are not going to be doing this quickly. Likewise for sign language. Spoken language would be needed. So a mouth or mouth-like orifice would be needed.

Eighth, it would likely be carbon based. There have been some ideas of other elements being the basis of life, such as silicon maybe. But its going to be carbon. Why? Because carbon is nature's two-bit whore. Carbon will bond to anything. It is so versatile that it is the mostly likely candidate for any other life out there.

one of my anime ideas involve aliens that inspired our image of the devil. interesting though I doubt they'd actually be like that. I'm just crossing my fingers that catgirls crash into the planet *fixes an imaginary tie* they'd be stranded and need a human ambassador

I'm hoping benevolent, peaceful and friendly aliens with lots of tentacles. I want to be the first human to engage in a tentacle fantasy romance.
