Come now; the average white person is not going to understand the experience of the average black person in our culture. White privilege is a real thing. What's more, the author of this realizes that it's not something all white people are out to "get" her for; she says our ignorance is unintentional.

I hope she's able to engage her friends with this aspect of herself. Also, this is correct:

Yeap, totally different school systems and everything.

Who knows it might be true. Maby we have burried star gates across the world that were used by aliens to rule us as gods. #stargategate

Assuming they weren't being satirical, what's worse, that the poster actually believed a cable series, or that they believed a Roland Emmerich movie?

I wanted my home to be a refuge, a place where I could be wretched when I wanted, walk around in my bonnet, fry chicken and sing real loud to Aretha Franklin’s R-E-S-P-E-C-T. Suppressing my blackness every day is exhausting. Back at Essence, we used “sister girl language,” but since then, I’d faced tougher environments. I briefly worked at a (now-defunct) women’s fashion website, where I was one of the only black people. I would pitch ideas that mattered to me, like how to do natural hair, only to see them ignored, shuffled to the side or diluted like apple juice in order to be made palatable to mainstream “whiteness.”

I had to stop and attempt to read this piece again because I just wanted to plant my face through the monitor at this. "Suppressing my blackness" "Mainstream whiteness" Jesus effing Christ.

The author appears to be the extreme bubble wrap variation of what's unfortunately not an uncommon phenom in our community where 'blackness' is a pre-packaged personality rather than a cultural identity. They filter the world through racial lens (Black issues, Black music, Black movies, etc.) and much like Ms. Ward, usually find themselves dumbfounded when they learn how much easier it is for whites to do it. Naturally, she got culture shock when thrust into a interracial environment. I guess at some point she realized she was a walking stereotype, panicked, and it just devolved into some extreme social anxiety because she felt like her "blackness" is under attack from all this "whiteness" around her.... or something. Like cool your old bosses talked "Sister girl" with you but in the real world most professional environments require standard. Social awareness isn't commonplace (not just among whites either) and I personally wouldn't want you walking around loudly singing R-E-S-P-E-C-T either.

I want to sympathize with her. I do. But identity politics is a hard one for me. Usually when I say something like "I'm revoking your Black card" it's in jest yet this chick seems like she would actually hand me one.

This irritates me and I'm not too sure why yet. What I do know is that she seems rather condescending towards her roommate.

I gave reading the whole story a shot. really, white people don't care about most of the stuff she's put down - her two white roommates and one chinese roommate most likely didn't care what she did before the great "suppressing" which seems more racist than anything else mentioned. white people may find fro's unattractive, but that's about it. eat your fried chicken, sing your songs, just stop bloody moaning you'd be happier doing whatever the hell you want

good lord people have issues. we are all human. If this guy is saying he has to suppress himself for a certain race then that is straight up racism.

It's a woman. And it all started just because someone didn't know about the shooting of Mike Brown.... That's sad.

Few years ago there was Bus accident that one Deaf man got killed and no one even care. I'm deaf, so should I start hating hearing people?

Yes there is a Deaf community.. I noticed some hated hearing people because of rejection.. thinking that Deaf people couldn't work (didn't think they're capable of being same level as hearing people) due to deafness.

I'm not like that, I think its waste of time hating people just because color of their skin or have disability.

Don't think that way, that will eventually eat you away! They're people like you, they may been busy with work/college and didn't read that new.. Or they skip that new because it bring sadness.. There so many sadness in this world that people wanted to ignored.

In my opinion Racism is waste of life, only bring anger and sorrow.. Just think positive and your heart will be at peace, Not all White/all Color of people are like that.

I grew up with my Father who is racist and I'm glad I'm not like him.

Anyways don't let it get to you. It may help talking about it with your roommates to get it off your chest.

Why didn't she just find new roommates then?
