Ya know every day my faith in humanity is eroded bit by bit. Those cowards who answered that they wouldn't save the woman and her child in this scenario are doing nothing to restore it. How in all honesty can those of you who answered no even stand to wake up in the morning and look at yourself in the mirror?

I'd wait and watch, and depending on how things went I might save them, idk I'm a coward and don't want to die so unless I know I have a good chance I probably won't attempt to save them. Also not having any context irks me so all the more reason to see how things play out.

I would save them. If I survived this long in a post apocalyptic world, I've probably was in the same scenario and knew how to kill.

I would try. I am pretty sure in a post apocalyptic setting i would have some sort of weapon for long or short distant combat.

I strongly believe that I would try to do something to help. Even if my mind was against it and out for it's own survival. I just have a "justice" complex for these kinds of situations.

Save them. I'm not sure why. Knowing what might happen, I would save them.

Yes, but you probably wouldn't like the reason why...

children shouldn't have to suffer if that is a possible outcome of me doing nothing I'd save them even if my only option was just to keep the 'gang' occupied long enough

Well a really hard one.

1. I would try, to observe as much as I can, to see/hear what is the main situation (as written, we don't know the intention of the group, they maybe attacking the or maybe even trying to praise them as goddess/god, you never know). Plus have to try see the faces of the group and the mother and child. The worst thing if you get "scammed", just seeing the group number and a mother and child in the circle and not seeing if the two are happy, reliefed or scarred to death. Imagine if you attack the group, which was searching/rescuing them and you jump at them. You won't be a good guy in their eyes... So first observe, measure the situation, then go to phase two.
2. When you did the observe and you see, that the intention of the group is to harm them (kill/rape/enslave etc), you have to make up a plan fast, to how to neutralize, scare them off, make them disorganized, pull their forces apart, so the mother and child could escape. Still have to avoid getting into the fight to much, remember you can be trained as much as you can be, but still numbers are numbers, they give an advantage in overall, and in a post-apocalyptic world, the lives usually doesn't mean to much for a crazy leader, if he/she wants to reach his/her goal, it will send in as much as it needs (remember, that there could be scouts, who can report that you attacked one of the scavenging group). And if you trying to neutralize them, try to go for the strongest/most advanced weapon holder first, usually, they are the leaders of the group or at least the most problematic ones. IF you get them out of the way, there is more chance for the mother and child and for yourself to escape, remember your main priority to save them and not to be a hero, who gives his life away without a real success
3. After having the basic attack plan, you need an escape plan as well, which again can be done while you do the observation of the group and area. Try to get into an area where you can hide/get away/get out of sight easier. No point in running in a wide, open space in one way, you just get exhausted and eventually collapse and then you are dead. You can still use the mother/child as a distraction to the attackers, so you can separate them and deal with them one by one, just don't forget to get the ones, that gone after the mother/child.
4. Check your weapons. If you have any to distract them (like smoke grenade or flash bang or pepper bomb) use those first, but keep in mind to have some reserve for the getaway to. If you have firearms, use them with caution, so you don't shoot the ones you want to save, if you're lucky you have suppressed gun, which can make a big distraction in the attacker group, especially if the don't see, where are you shooting from. If you are fast, and take out a fare amount of them (again first aim for the leader/stronger/best weaponed person, or if one is trying to get to the mother/child, get that one first. And remember, that a headshot not always the best, especially if you just want them to get away from the people in danger and not trying to kill them. If you have only melee weapons use the one which suits you the best, but won't be a disadvantage in the fight (maybe you are the best with a long sword, but in a close quarter fight it is a disadvantage, same with a lance).
5. Always remember this: If you can avoid a fight and save the ones you want, do it that way. No need to waste energy, ammo, life in a post-apocalyptic world, where you never know, when you need them.

So in short I would save them, after I do my observation of the situation and come up with a plan to save them and myself. (Sorry to make it so long )

No! It's easier to say yes, but if there's a gang with ill intentions there's not much I could do. I'd probably sit back and watch. If they were bad guys, I'd be out of there in a flash
