I 100% agree with all these.

Some more to add on top of all those great ones that I have on my personal top list are.....

GTO (Great Teacher Onizuka) (has everything in my opinion)
Blade the Immortal (brutally awesome, if you like vagabond you probably will like this)
Genshiken (not super long manga)
Hajime no ippo (one of the longest running mangas)
Yotsuba&! (hilarious and cute)

It's a really tough call but for me it'd probably be...

Uminneko When They Cry (Dark/Mystery/Horror)
Nisekoi (Rom-Com)
Monster Musume (Rom-com, Ecch)
Candy Boy (Yuri)
Prison School (Ecchi, Rom-com)

Berserk is without a doubt the best manga I have read in my life. The quality of the drawings is amazing, very few manga artists take the time to really give their illustrations so much detail like Kentaro Miura does with Berserk. The story and the characters are so good that they it makes you feel like you're reading a novel instead of a manga. The downside is that it is incomplete and it is constantly on hiatus, sometimes even for years. But if you want something to read, Bersek is one of the best options you can find, that is if you don't have problems with extreme violence.

I agree with him. Literally the best manga ever. If you're looking for something serious, dark and almost 0% comical, dive into this. Be warned though, it's very violent and.... disturbing at times.

My personal recommendation for you is to start reading from vol.3 golden age chapter to vol.14 end of golden age, go back to vol.1 - vol.3 (to the point where you started reading the golden age arc) and then go back to where you left off on vol.14. I read I the series numerically from vol.1 to current but reading it the way I recommended will actually let see the story of Berserk CHRONOLOGICALLY and it will kind of make more sense (and actually be somewhat spoiler free since vol.1 - 3 gives you hints about certain things.) Whichever way you to start is up to you though.
