I've always been more into action anime with a sprinkle of comedy, but from my understanding, Gintama is the other way around. If the comedy is anything like one punch man I might consider starting it.

It's like OPM in that it parodies many cliched tropes in anime, but the format and story are completely different. It's one of the best anime out there in terms of rewarding emotional payoffs and how the characters consistently grow throughout the series. Though it is a longer series that requires commitment to get through all the various arcs. Luckily it's hilarious all the way through. It best achieves its comedy when you have some knowledge of what they're making fun of, so be warned that there may be a lot of jokes or gags that you and lots of viewers (including myself) may not grasp.

Ultimately, it's what kind of devotion you give the series that decides how much of an impact it will have on you. I personally felt the series continually got better and better right until its last arc and recommend it on its overall quality but nonetheless there is a barrier to really getting into the show.

I started watching Gintama when it was fansubbed, before Crunchyroll hosted it. It starts off as mainly a comedy but after a while more action is introduced and it kinda becomes a battle anime for a while then goes back to being a comedy. You'll notice running gags and character development as well. Sometimes it can get a little talkative. I'd give it a shot. I did prefer the fansub since they actually tried to make an attempt to explain some of the jokes.

I'm the same, i've always liked action but Gintama is really good and I would recommend getting into it!

Only watch Gintama if you enjoy episodic shows. If you are craving something with more plot development, Gintama is the wrong choice.

I was wondering the same thing. Thanks to the replies in this thread, I'm going to give it a shot.

YES.

It's comprised of mostly of hilarious one-off's, but the arcs that come along that are BADASS
I could go on forever on how much I love this series, but then i would spoil it

Sure, give it a try you will either love it or hate it. I watched a few episodes and was quite bored with it, maybe it was because I haven't watched enough to catch a lot of the references.
