It may be an old issue but the denial of world war 2 war crimes still seems to be a thing.

I'm confused about this. I don't know if it's denial or just not apologizing for it. Maybe both?

Yeah North America really ain't got a leg to stand on when it comes to revisionist history bashing mate. My high school history course failed to cover the horrid things the Europeans did to my people.

So we can't criticize Japan trying to hush up a history of war crimes because Europeans did things to Your People(tm)?

Yeah that's why most of the Japanese born in North America and exposed to our diet tend to be both taller and heavier.

Heavier, yes. >.>

And while you are correct, you're a bit off geographically. The diet/lifestyle thing is a big factor with China, Vietnam, etc. Places that have large poor and/or rural populations that have less access to better food and education related to it. Japan use to be in that boat way back but these days not to so much. Average heights in Japan these days, especially among younger generations, are only a couple cm off from North America.

Access to good food and education is an economic marker and Japan is not a poor country.

Long work days, even if they're not actually doing anything productive. Friends that went over there to do the JET program would tell me about how the teachers would basically do nothing during the day so they looked like they had stuff to do after hours. They wouldn't get paid for the after hours stuff but it was like a competition as to who seemed like the hardest worker by who stayed the latest every night.

I love Japan, anime, people, girls, culture, heritage and history. This doesn't mean it's perfect however.

My number one complaint:

Lack of heating in some buildings is almost normal there.

>< I don't do good with the cold ><

Lack of heating? More like lack of A/C, I'll take cold over heat any day haha. But to answer the question, I can't really say I know enough about Japan to justify disliking anything.

The blatant focus on the superficial.

You're over 25 and a single woman? Forget being successful at your job, as a woman, you're a failure. Want to show off your unique personality? Nope. We're gonna insult you and ostracize you until you conform, and screw the fact that you're biracial - that's your dumb fault you were born that way.

Yeah, lots of intolerance in Japan. Especially in Tokyo. As a group, Tokyoites can be pretty damn insensitive.

I've seen both. Unfortunately I couldn't find the article about what he was denying but some Japanese politician said that it was an issue that there was no proof of - or at least something along those lines.

the prime minister "apologized" for the war (while refusing to acknowledge the specific war crimes [0]), and the next day he pays his honors to the very soldiers that raped and killed children during the war/occupation [1]. ok, not the next day, but you get the idea. he pushed the blame to the western colonialism ([0]) and tried to prevent people from even so much as honoring the sex victims[2]

edit: iirc his populariy also declined among Japanese. Abe is literally pandering to the national extremists.
