What does everyone who downloaded the NiOh Alpha on PlayStation think of the game now?
I've been looking for another good samurai game on PlayStation, and I've had my eye on NiOh for a while now. Playing it was the best waste of my time ever.

I didn't get a lot of time to play but what I did get to experience I really enjoyed. I love the setting and I've always wished for Team Ninja to make a Ninja Gaiden game set in that time period with Japanese folklore elements so Ni Oh is a pretty damn good compromise.

It sure is no Ninja Gaiden, but it's a good place to start. I played it since it was released last month, people have been saying its just like Dark Souls and Ninja Gaiden in difficulty and it really did a good job for an alpha.
What I'm really wishing for its that this will cement people's interest in this genre, and we'll get more games like Ninja Gaiden and NiOh because of that.

I loved the setting and think there is some promise there, but overall I was fairly disappointed. The main character was almost as boring as you could get, the first area just didn't feel interesting or well put together (it felt very much like a test zone than an actual game location) and the enemies had no life or personality. I also felt, gameplay wise, that it was trying too hard to "Not be Souls" while at the same time trying to stick fairly closely to the Souls formula such that all of the ways in which it tried to deviate from the Souls formula is where is failed the hardest. The MMO loot system with the severe weapon/armour degradation was awful and made none of the items feel cool or interesting, and it also hurt the drive to actually explore the area. The ki system just felt like a janky and stupidly punishing extreme version of Souls-esque stamina. The mid/high/low stance system just felt like a "we have to make it more complicated" version of 1 handing or 2 handing.

In the end, I'm less excited by the game now than before I played the Alpha. I've gone from "I'm almost definitely going to buy that when it's out" to "I'll wait to see what others say and to watch copious amounts of finished gameplay footage before I even decide." But, that said, it is an Alpha demo and they don't even have a confirmed release date yet. Combine that with the fact that they actually asked for player input and I still have some hope they'll work things out. This, thankfully, isn't just another "Oh it's a Beta test and we're seriously going to make changes based on player input.. but the game comes out in two weeks!" scenario.

I downloaded the demo a few days ago but I didn't get to try it out yet. It seems okay from what I've seen so far. I don't even know if im going to pick it up but I would like to at least try out the demo when I can! For some reason I have a feeling that I'm going to feel the same way as how Strider put it. I'll come back and post my opinion if I ever manage to get around to it anytime soon.
