A Mexican lawmaker for the ruling PRI party will present a bill before her state's congress to criminalize the creation and dissemination of memes on social networks.

Martha Orta Rodriguez suggests a penalty of up to four years in prison and a fine of nearly US$2,000 for those responsible for creating these often humorous and satirical images on the Web.

Orta said she is trying to prevent “harmful" and “humiliating” images from being circulated on the Internet, but unsurprisingly her proposal was not received well online.
A viral campaign of memes has flooded the web in Mexico with all kind of jokes and comments making fun of the lawmaker’s plans to criminalize them.

Orta Rodriguez belongs to the most conservative wing of the PRI party in the north-central Mexican state of San Luis Potosi.

The criticisms against her proposal have been fueled by the fact that the state she represents has more than 2.3 million people living in poverty.

Residents believe that lawmakers should be addressing other issues rather than being worried about what people do with memes on the Internet.

Mexicans. Did they not elect her? Seriously, she should be addressing the crime in her country.

A part of me thinks this is a troll "story," but another segment of myself wouldn't be surprised to learn that this woman is daft enough to pull this.

You know...considering all the violence that goes on with the drug cartels in her country, I think Senora Rodriguez should be focusing her energies on that and not be too concerned about memes.

When will people learn that you can't control the internet? This reminds me of the time Barbara Streisand sued to get a picture of her house removed from the internet, and then because of the news story the picture of her house went viral and millions of people who never even would have cared in the first place saw it. Why anyone would care about internet memes or a picture of their house being on the internet in the first place makes no sense to me though. Like, really, where's the harm being done?

but just in San Luis Potosí, that law doesn't apply for the rest of the country and it will probably be taken down after a couple of months or when the next president is elected in two years. That kind of stupid statments are just made for social media and drama
