Talent agency Walkure is looking to sign a crop of new voice/vocal performers looking for work in the anime, video game, idol, and pachinko machine sectors. It’s even holding auditions in Tokyo on May 14. Looking over the information on the event’s website, among the conditions applicants have to meet are provisions both legal and practical. For example, applicants must not be currently under contract with a competing agency, and must be willing to relocate or commute to the Tokyo area, where the majority of their work-related activities will be carried out.

But the list also includes this:

“We reserve the right to reject applicants involved in illegal activities, or who have been engaged in adult videos or modeling.”

not surprised. seiyuu having romantic affairs and such is a big deal in Japan. even a tiny, uncomfirmed rumor can ruin an otherwise successful seiyuu's career.

For a country that created several new fetishes Japan is awfully prudish.

That is ridiculously stupid. The anime industry, out of all the places, the damn anime industry, is trying to act all high and noble? Fuck outta here.

For a country that fetishises literally everything, Japan sure shames women who do exactly that a whole lot. Even idols and celebrities can be ruined if they so much as have a healthy relationship in their spare time. And the anime industry of all places rejecting women who've been in pornography when it literally goes out of it's way to be as racy and sexual as possible?

Get fuckin' real. It's okay if men think about it and women indulge their fantasies, but women can't do it themselves? What a crock of shit.

I think that's fine. I see nothing wrong if their goal is to portray a wholesome image with an intention to appeal to a younger and/or more prudish audience. I mean, unless they're hiring for hentai seiyuus in which case it would be dumb to not count that as experience, they do in fact reserve that right. If someone is disqualified based on that, then that's tough luck. Gotta live with the consequences of past choices, I guess.

A 'wholesome image'? Even some of the all age shonen has fanservice in it! This isn't the West. There's more anime with fanservice than without. It's extremely hypocritical. For that matter, which children would KNOW about a particular seiyu's history? It's more than likely they don't even know who the seiyu are. This is just another example of Japan trying to restrict women who happen to have anything even remotely sexual associated with them.

It's not hypocritical unless they're doing hentai or any kind of overly sexual series. It's called having standards and since it's a well-known thing that having such rumors or even videos surface can cause major headaches for agencies to do damage control, they do in fact reserve the right to make that exception. They're not being sexist. They're just acting in their own best interest. Might I also point out that it's not Japan doing the restriction. It's the company. Celebrities ANYWHERE live under a microscope and there will always be people trying to find dirt on them. I don't blame a company for trying to avoid future problems. I do think it's a ridiculous thing to insinuate sexism or turn it into a sexist issue. Strictly speaking, it's a business decision. Let's not get so emotional about it.

If they want to limit their choices that way, then they may.

Dude, what I'm saying is MOST ANIME have sexual undertones. Most shonen anime have more fanservice than you can shake a stick at, even the ones aimed at kids. Harem anime are abundant even if they aren't sexually explicit. Restricting voice actors from taking roles that are likely to be sexualised in some form anyway on the basis of them being involved in sexual activity is what's hypocritical.

Japan as a nation has a habit of doing something like this anyway. Look at the idol industry, where you can literally lose your job if you date someone because it shatters the image men like to project onto you that you're their 'waifu'. Anime is an extremely sexual medium, and is aired for all ages at all times of day, and the female characters in a lot of anime like harem and some shonen anime are literally there to be ogled at and used for fanservice, but women who may have had jobs in the porn industry in the past can't voice them?

It's a little different in the west when you wouldn't want the face of a porn star in your hollywood production, which I can understand, but in anime they're literally just recording lines in a booth which is then applied to an animated character. There's a pretty large disconnect between the character on the screen and the voice of the actor.

The company can hire whomever and reject for whatever reasons they want, I don't see any problems or newsworthyness.
