I wanted to get some differing opinions on a question that has been on my mind for some time. Do you think it is more important for anime to have a good story (something that makes you think), or do more people prefer anime that is visually appealing? Obviously it would be ideal to have both (as many great anime do), but given the option of only selecting one, which would you personally choose?

For me I don't mind sitting through an anime that has average art/animation if the story is amazing, because I feel more enjoyment from a good story than great visuals (which is probably why I love reading so much). However some of my friends IRL that watch anime think that the visuals should have higher priority, since they feel that anime that isn't appealing to the eye can have a great story, but still be considered a poor anime because the art fails to keep your attention long enough for the story to sink in. I can kind of understand both sides of the argument. I think that any anime aspiring to be great should have a good balance of both a good plot, and good visuals.

I really want to know what you guys think though,. Which do you prefer more?

Depends on the genre and the degree to which the the story/art suffers.

I, personally, would generally prefer a better story.

As you say, a combination of both is ideal. However, if I absolutely had to choose, it would be story that takes importance. Look at it like storytelling is a cake. The cake is your base story, with all the ingredients being the plot, characters, pacing, planning, and structure. The icing is what makes the story appealing to our senses. Its the soundtrack, the designs, and of course, the animation. If your base cake is dry, or tasteless, or any kind of bad metaphor you can think of, then chances are that icing won't help all that much. Maybe the icing is good, buts little more than an accessory to a bad cake.

On the other hand, I'm perfectly willing to eat a cake without icing if its good. Legend of the Galactic Heroes is an anime that I don't think is particularly special animation wise, but I'm being gripped by an interesting story. Its the cake with very basic icing. While I can't speak for everybody, I think I would prefer it if the cake itself tastes fine even if its doesn't look as nice as that multi-layer wedding cake thats also available to be eaten.

Though I'm admittedly not consistent with this ideology all the time. I love the Air Gear Manga despite its story becoming kind of silly near the end. A pretty big appeal for me is the jaw-dropping beautiful art, and how it made everything seem more dynamic and cool as I read through it.

I would have to say good visuals, animation etc.
If all you wanted is a good story why not read a book or something -.-'''

This is a tricky question tbh i would choose a good story but the anime will still have to have decent graphics for me to at least watch it. Now if the graphics are great and story is crap then i will not watch it all. But to really love an anime its gotta have both.

Now I want cake.
Jokes aside, I feel very similarly to this, but it is interesting to know that a lot of people are at each end of the spectrum.

The perfect anime is the balance of visual and content. Of the two, my choice is content. I can overlook poorly drawn visuals but cannot with a poorly written script.

No arguments here. I just wanted to get a better idea of what people felt was more important to a series. I do understand, though, that the general consensus is that the best series are top quality in both aspects.

i prefer the story. of course a combination of both is preferred, but i'd rather be entertained than be aesthetically pleased, in all honesty. and if the animation is horrendous that just makes it more entertaining imo lol

Visuals are completely irrelevant...If it has a good story, characters, and execution then there is absolutely no reason for it to not be recognized as good at the very least. It doesn't work in the opposite case.

Story matters more. If the story is poorly written, the only thing that can keep most people watching is if it's so bad that it becomes an entertaining train wreck. You can have a mediocre story with some of the best visuals ever (Guilty Crown) but it won't be as good as a story that is well planned out and only has visuals that are average at best.
