I personally enjoy the story over art, though art definitely adds flavor and texture to an anime.

Story is defiantly more important. Visuals are great and all but they aren't enough to keep someone watching if the story is awful. That's why I encourage people to not judge an anime just by visuals alone. I notice a good amount of people that shy away from animes with strange art styles.

This is possibly the toughest question I've ever seen asked in an anime forum and yet it's also the one that should be the easiest one to answer as an anime fan.

I've watched anime wirh bad art and anime with bad writing and in both cases I turned them off and walked away. It doesn't have to be a perfect balance but there has to be at least an attempt at balance made for me to watch it. If I was pigeonholed I guess I'd have to remember that most of the anime I grew up on young fans today see as having crappy artwork and I enjoyed the stories. I guess my answer would have to be good story plus crappy artwork would be preferred.

I like a good balance so i think both is important but i don't really nitpick on things unless it's painfully obvious.
