Would you steal to feed your family?
Posted 5/12/16
Let's say you were having a lot of trouble getting a job and you're in bad shape economically.
Let's weigh options. You could hold out and see how things go or you could steal and risk jail time and feed your family.
What would you do?

Tough question.

How bad economically? Do you mean I have absolutely nothing or extremely little?

Think of it this way. You have nothing but for all you know you could have something soon. It's like if you had an S.O.S on a stranded island every day and the one day you gave up and didn't put one up a helicopter flies overhead. Would you risk jail time and then really be unable to feed your family?

Alright so it's not a definite soon, but a hopeful one...if I'm understanding correctly. Knowing my luck if I waited nothing would happen, and the second i acted everything would work out.

If a person on average can go three weeks without food and about three days without water, I would wait it out. I am pretty sure I could at least get my hands on water to be able to keep my family hydrated. However if the third week begins coming to a close and I'm still not able to supply, I would probably resort to stealing.

I'd probably try begging first.

Good answer. Now.....you're a crook. Prepare for people to judge you.

People will judge me regardless. If I didn't steal I could be judged as a terrible father/husband who can not support his family. There is basically no winning with people.

Would I be a crook? Yes, but is what I did truly wrong? Keep in mind my intentions were not malicious, but desperation.

It would be something that would weigh on my shoulders, but I would take the burden if it meant my family was cared for.

Sure, if there was no other means to earn money or get food if the alternative is dying than the answer should be obvious unless you are that dumb or willing to die for some weird moral conviction.

I'd steal for my family, kill for the family, kidnap for the family, whatever it takes if it means my mom doesn't have to suffer.

My point exactly. Life's hard, ain't it? There're a lot of grey areas, doc.

Yup if that was the only choice, tbh it isn't that hard to steal food so I think I would be okay though things could always go wrong, but I'm willing to do it if I had to.

Definitely not. I would let them starve.
Posted 5/12/16
That would depend on a few different factors. If I lived in a country with a welfare system, I would try that. If I didn't live in a country lucky enough to have a system like that, I would ask for help from family or friends more fortunate than me; asking for help might mean asking those family/friends to take in the most vulnerable members of my family and lessen the number of mouths I have to feed. Okay, now let's say that none of those things are an option. Let's say I live in a really, really crappy place where there will be no outside help in any form. No one will hire me. My family has not eaten in days. We are starving to death. Yes, I would steal if not doing so would mean the death of my family.

However, let me ask you this: who is going to feed my family after I go to jail?

From your description, it sounds like I am usually a major contributor towards the support of my struggling family. If that is the case and my family was not yet on the brink of starvation, I would not steal until I had turned over every single rock and begged every employer I could find for whatever honest job I might find. It wouldn't matter if it was "hard." Money is money and food is food. By going to jail, I could actually become more of a burden to my family. There are some places where prisons do not feed you: your family is expected to bring you food and you starve if that does not happen. Even if prison did decide to feed me, it is still a fact that a bread winner for the family would be absent for a considerable amount of time and that could be even more problematic than the situation you describe above.
