No. Once you eliminate those people who are "jerks" out of the world and leave the nice, eventually that group would categorize themselves on how far they are willing to go to be nice etc. Thus making whoever is the "least nice" the "jerk".

Also what makes you think we have to help everyone? Honestly, OP what's so wrong with being out there for ourselves or however you phrased it?!
Just as many wars have been fought by thinking with the mentality of wanting to help everyone.

Another thing... just because someone has a different opinion then yours does not mean you have the right to call them close minded.

Not exactly because at some point in their lives, everybody is a jerk. Not to mention, the jerk label isn't permanent, so in order words we need those jerks in this world because they can still be quite useful. And going by that criteria, humanity would go extinct. That's simply a bizarre thought that is misapplied.

The answer would be the same as the other thread. People who kill others are jerks so they get killed and those get killed as the non jerks are now jerks and so on. Even if there's a moral high ground where does one draw the line as to where the level of jerkiness is "acceptable"? There may be people who are more sensitive to "jerks" than other people. Do they get to decide on who a jerk is? Do they get to off a jerk because they thought he was a jerk when 99% of people around them think he was fine? Do you become a jerk just because you disagree with someone?

Hell, if jerks were killed to make a "nicer" society I would have been killed off when I was 12. I suppose

This is a very packed set of questions and statements. In order to respond to all of your musings it would be prudent to expand beyond the confines of regular post size etiquette. However, I will endeavour to respond to the title question at minimum.

Define 'a jerk'. If you think of a jerk as someone who acts on their own self interest then everyone is a jerk. Human beings operate on some level to sustain themselves, if they didn't they would die. Call it the selfish gene, call it whatever you want; but basic preserving basic interests, instinctively securing what you see as crucial to success as an organism is what we all must do. In doing so you must act in self interest on some level and therefore could be considered a jerk. There are no firm lines which separate levels of self interest and in the modern day a simple act like using a computer to post on a forum could be considered a jerk move, due in part to all the attributed costs to other individuals in doing so. Factors can collude to make an individual's acts worse than they originally intend. Furthermore, do we consider their intention or their end action as grounds to them being jerks?

If the world was eliminated back down to pure altruistic beings that loved and petted each other it would look a little like the people on the surface of Earth in H.G. Wells "The Time Machine". Boring, dull and beautiful.

They show that humanity evens itself out given what is needed. If you took the lame shy loser from every group, and forced them together, then the natural roles would redevelop. This would include the 'jerk' of the group. This problem also assumes a very Black and White view of the world. "What causes jerks to express it so openly?" "Is this jerk actually causing quantifiable harm?" "Do we have to address to respond to this jerk?" "Is this jerk simply venting?"
