Can Clannad Afterstory be watched without watching Clannad? Or do you need both in order for it to really sink in?

Plastic Memories. Haha I kind more afraid now to enter a relationship.

The last anime that made me feel this way... It was only from the very first episode of Deadmand Wonderland

I completely agree with you about Hotarubi no Mori E!
It's literally impossible for me to watch it without crying every time.

Other than that there were many parts in Fullmetal Alchemist that tore me up, especially the Nina Tucker part.

To get the most out of After Story you do need to watch Clannad first.

Your Lie In April is gut wrenching even though you can see the ending coming a mile away. Toradora! has some really moving moments but it doesn't seem to pull as heavily on folks unless they've had to deal with finding one's self.

Listen to Me, Girls, I’m Your Father! gets me every time though. It is a gut wrenching, heart stomping, make you cry a river story about what it means to be a family.

After Story would mostly make sense (except for the alternate world scenes, which only half make sense anyway) without the first season--as long as you look up somewhere who the different characters are--but you wouldn't be nearly as invested in the characters and so likely the emotional impact would be a lot less.

Also, the first season of Clannad is still a very good show--it's just a lot more of a typical high school romance anime (whereas at least half of After Story takes place after graduation). The biggest problem with Clannad is that the second half of the season (which deals with Tomoyo, the twins, and Nagisa) is much stronger than the first half (most of which is taken up with Fuko and Kotomi), which means that it doesn't give the strongest first impression. Stick with it, however, and you'll be rewarded.

Also, if you don't want to invest that much time, you could always watch the Clannad movie, which is on Hulu. It tells basically the same story, but in two hours, although it alters the ending somewhat.

A few scenes from Angel Beats had me feeling pretty sad, especially the ending. That was particularly notable since I tend not to emotionally connect to the anime while I watch it, at least not enough to start crying when a tearjerker scene is playing. I think I was about 15 when I finished it.

I’m a sensitive person, so most shows make me emotional at one point or another; however, if I had to choose the show that had the most emotional impact overall, I’d opt for either Neon Genesis Evangelion or Welcome to the N.H.K.

NANA - when a certain someone gets pregnant.

Steins;Gate - Twice. The end of episode 12. And the end of episode 20.

So many, but my top three would probably be Sola, Myself;Yourself, and Wolf Children (in no particular order).

Furiko: This does more in three minutes than Clannad ever did with 47 episodes.

La Maison en Petits Cubes: This is 12 minutes and is on Crunchyroll.

I totally forgot to add Steins;Gate. I never cried, but that whole anime was just a roller-coaster of emotions to which there is no equal.
