Angel Beats - I have to give Key credit; they can give me a setting that is utterly preposterous, and then use it to maximum emotional effect.

The beauty of Angel Beats is how it handles tone shift. It can go from gripping to hilarious and back over one sequence, or it can spend an entire episode being one kind of show or another. It could easily have been an incoherent mess but it's expertly managed.

I've said elsewhere that Beats suffered from a very ambitious setting that probably needed another twelve episodes to fully develop, the way Key has done with other series. That said, I think Yui's journey stands as the best example of what you're saying. Her character and story gives some of the show's funniest moments, but also one hell of an emotional sledgehammer.

Aside from the show's ultimate reveal at the end, I think Yui's arc is my favorite part of it.

Well a number of anime have done this over the year the first that did it was Angel Beats. Even to this day I cant listen to the OP without feeling emotion.

Same problem with "Song for Friends" from Little Busters. I keep skipping over it in my queue unless I'm in the right mood.

a few are: your lie in april, assassination classroom (the end) and one I don't hear a lot of people talking about is charlotte (there was this one part that was so sad in my opinion and surprising and I cried like esidisi from jojo). charlotte is overshadowed by angel beats but is much better than angel beats.

Your Lie In April killed me.

Naruto had moments that killed me when I was a kid.

Erased made me cry at the breakfast scene. Idc what you say.

Nothing ripped my heart out more than Grave of the Fireflies did. That and Kimi no na wa are the only anime that have made me ugly cry. Coming to a close second with a tear shed was Orange. :'(

Damn that ending. It took me a while to rewatch it because I just can't.

Elfin Lied ripped my emotions all over the place. It really enlightened me on the power of anime. Though I don't regret seeing it, I can't bring myself to see it a second time.

Hell Girl makes a point of making you feel like shit every single episode. The new season isn't that good, but the first season especially is. To me at least.

I'm not sure about having my soul torn out, but Hell Girl was one of many contributing influences that destroyed my faith in humanity...

I couldn't take it. I was like what are these people trying to do to me T^T. Then Rin just kept on and he got immune and I was still crying like WHAT THE HECK! But I for him he had it happen over a bunch of days. For me it was a few hours.

Squid Girl

This is actually a comedy but the I think it was the last episode of the first season
sad episode.

I feel like when comedy actually has an episode with seriousness, you expect so humor for relief and when it doesn't happen and the mood just stays intense it kinda tears you apart inside cause you laughed with the characters and now you just wanna cry with them too.
