Censorship questions.
Posted 5/14/16 , edited 5/14/16
One does CR ever get updated version or not? Like a lot of their shows or not?
Does Hulu ever get updated version or not? Like a lot or not?
I know Funi does for their show but usually after awhile.
I am asking because I when to Hulu to see if they got the uncensored version of Shimoneta. Nope still censored. So why keep the censored version?

Crunchyroll and Funi generally only get the uncensored versions once they get the home video materials from Japan. I say generally because there have been exceptions recently.

For Crunchyroll this used to mean just catalog series, never simulcasts in the past but recently Crunchy has acquired some uncensored simulcasts, sometimes even exclusively to the point where folks from Japan watch Crunchy rips like Rail Wars and Akame ga Kill. At least on one occasion Crunchyroll had two versions: Okusama wa Seitokaicho/My Wife is the Student Council President where you can watch it censored or uncensored.

For Funi it means while the anime is airing in japan it is censored but they generally get the uncensored materials from Japan a period after the discs are sold in Japan which they use for their home video releases. This can be a long wait and sometimes they only put the dubbed versions up uncensored though that may change now that they have broadcast dubs as well. Sometimes Funi never gets the uncensored materials from Japan for some reason like with SankaRea. Even if there is an AT-X version airing, Funi never seems to get it uncensored while it is airing.

I expect that Hulu never gets the uncensored versions but I'm not sure as I can't watch Hulu from Canada.

Didn't SankaRea got pull back or something do to backlash? Eventually, they got the uncensored version? Well that what I read but maybe I wrong. Hulu has series that are uncensored. But I believe those are older series.

Sentai puts home video, read uncensored, versions up on Hulu once they have the materials. Not sure if FUNi does or not, but FUNi does put them up on its own site once they have the materials and release it on disc.

As to CR, it never puts up uncensored stuff unless that is what they are given initially from their partner in the deal. The reason being CR does not typically license for home video, only broadcast, and thus does not pay for the home video version. Though, there are a handful of exceptions to this. Free being one where they got the full rights including home video. Not sure if they ever swapped out the video for that one or not, though.

The Sankarea thing was a case of FUNi releasing the censored broadcast version of it on disc instead of the home video version. this happened because FUNi did not double check the materials they got from their Japanese partner and found they were essentially screwed over by them initially with a censored version provided instead of the home video version. FUNi did rectify this by rereleasing it with the uncensored version once they got the correct materials from their partner in Japan.

KarenAraragi ...

I know SankaRea had a refund offer. I'm not sure if they ever re-released it uncensored as I bought the Japan import instead as it had all the OVAs included, even the ones from the manga bundles, first time ever on BD and with a new cast commentary. Someone who follows R1 home video releases might remember but I don't, sorry.
Edit:

Well there we have it, they did fix it.

Can't/don't watch Hulu so didn't realize Sentai would be uncensored there. I watch Sentai stuff either here or on TAN/ANO where I know it is uncensored for old stuff at least (already on home video).

Yes, indeed CR only puts up what they initially get which is usually the censored TV version from Japan but we had those recent exceptions of Akame, Rail Wars and Student Council Prez. Usually CR only gets uncensored in catalog titles as they are from the home video version.

I no longer have a dub membership on Funi but I don't wait anyway. If there is something censored on Funi but uncensored... elsewhere then, sorry Funi but I watch the AT-X version elsewhere. Shows that Funi gets censored are generally REALLY censored, to the point of being unwatchable. I still have a subscription there and sometimes try to give those shows a view there too but man... censorship is sure annoying so I always watch uncensored if I can.

I have a SubPass on FUNi but in the case of a Shimoneta, Valkyrie Drive, or DxD, I do the same as you.

Thankfully, most things they get per season are not censored to hell ecchi, so it is worth the sub for those at least. I do buy the home video version if I like it enough as well.

Will Valkyrie Drive get a dub?

I hope so, but I don't believe there has been any word one way or the other yet. Recently, FUNi has started releasing shows without dubs, so it would not surprise me if it does not get one. though, ecchi series are typically better sellers and ones that warrant them dubbing. I guess a big part of the decision for FUNi will come down to streaming numbers and show buzz.

Unfortunately, them NOT having the uncensored broadcast version when it aired likely hurt those numbers. It is the catch-22 of these things.

I believe this follows the same pattern as TAN/ANO, where titles that were originally streamed the same season as broadcast in Japan get an uncensored version put up only in the dub version (if one is made). If it also applied to subtitle-only versions, then Hulu should have an uncensored version of the first To Love-ru Darkness (released on home video by Sentai in July 2014), but they certainly don't.

I don't get that. I watch both seasons on Hulu of The Qwaser of Stigmata and they were uncensored. That show is something else when it comes to fanservice .

That was a title that was acquired by Sentai after it had already aired. As I noted, it is the ones that they start streaming during the same season they are airing that get stuck with the censored subtitled versions.

So only older series from 2 or more years have a chance of being uncensored then?
