Ran a bypass on a rental truck's cooling system using some flexible pipe clamps to bypass the ruptured cabin heater so I could get out of Nevada and back to civilization. The rental company was not happy with my "unauthorized maintenance", but they were less displeased about it when I threatened to sue them for renting me a vehicle with a defective engine cooling system that could have killed me in the desert.

Seriously, though, what idiot engineer runs a SINGLE coolant system for both critical engine cooling *and* cabin heating on the same flow circuit?

Reminds me of crossing the Mojave in the Uhaul truck that started overheating - just cranked the heat on high, opened the windows, kept on trucking and made it across. Glad I had put about 5 gallons of water in the cab before we started across. There was nowhere to pull over because all along the way were warnings that the shoulder was soft and I passed a guy in a Ryder truck who'd pulled off and sunk up to the axles and was trying to dig himself out with a plastic lawn chair.

I used to make gangster movies with my friends in high school during the late 90s. This was before home computers were powerful enough for non-linear (Avid, Adobe Premiere, etc) editing, and we didn't have access to any professional-grade linear (tape-to-tape) editing hardware, so editing the movies required a camcorder, two VCRs, a hi-fi, a cassette walkman, an Amiga A600, Amiga-compatible digitiser, and a pile of cables.

Trickiest parts of the process:
- Adding music: first, edit the footage from the camcorder to a VHS tape. Run a composite video and left audio channel RCA cable from VCR1 to VCR2. Attach right audio channel RCA cable from walkman (with a tape of the required music) to VCR2. Record onto a second VHS tape on VCR2. If VCR2 has stereo capability you would end up with video plus dialogue on the left audio channel and music on the right. In this case VCR2 was mono, so the audio channels were mixed together.
- Adding sound effects: similar to adding music, except that you need to find a movie that includes the sound effect you need (we couldn't afford SFX CDs) in a part where there was no overlapping music or dialogue, connect VCR1 to the hi-fi, record the sound effect onto audio cassette, then pop that cassette into the walkman to follow the steps above. If we wanted music and effects in the same scene, it meant two separate recording passes, and a terrible quality final master.
- Adding credits: usually straightforward, just connect the Amiga to VCR2, plus the walkman for music. It became trickier if I needed credits to appear over video. Then I'd have to find the spot on the video where I needed the credit to appear, pause both VCR1 and 2, connect VCR1 to the Amiga's digitiser (which was only capable of capturing either a single colour frame or black and white video at 3fps), capture a still, add the credit, connect the Amiga to VCR2, record the still + credit to the master tape, and then repeat the whole process for each credit. Worse, there was a time limit, as VCRs can only maintain pause for a couple of minutes to prevent the tape being stretched, and stopping the tape would mean losing the exact position for resuming recording. This meant I had to switch the cables over quickly while everything was switched on. I got a few electric shocks.

I worked at boy scout camp. Do the math, I lived in a tent and was paid $50 a week when I started and $150 a week when I stopped. At boy scout camp I received one evening off... so from 17:00 to 5:00. As well as one 24 hour period off between Saturday and Sunday. I was one of the Sadists who was too stupid to qualify for the scholarship that would have given me up to $20000 depending on where I went to college.

Why the heck would you do that.

There are doors and stairs and elevators. If you were late for class, you failed as a ninja.
