I've just finished watching my first four anime shows after being introduced to them by my roommate: Sword Art Online, Sword Art Online II, Fate/Zero, and Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Bladeworks. As someone who doesn't know much about the genre, can someone recommend a show or film/films that are somewhat similar? The biggest thing for me I think is the presence of a strong female protagonist and slight romantic subtext. Also, I prefer dubbed if possible.

If you want a strong female protagonist, few shows can match Kill la Kill. Seriously I can't recommend this show enough One of the most epic anime you'll have the pleasure to see.

If you want something close to SAO try Log Horizon, it's basically the same set up but handled in a very different way.

You can also try Akame ga Kill, not the best anime in the world but still entertaining with good action and a lot of strong and charismatic girls. And a little bit of romance thrown in there, but just a little.

For a final recommendation, this one doesn't have female protagonists or romance but it's worth giving a try: JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. I can't promise that you will like this since it's a modern adaptation of a manga written in the 80s, but if you're willing to see past that, you'll find one of the most entertaining anime there is. Also, you'll be introduced to one of the greatest anime villains of all time.

Great, I'll let you know that JoJo and Log Horizon are the longest of the list. Log Horizon has 50 episodes, while JoJo has 81 and counting.

Kill la Kill and Akame ga Kill both have 24 episodes each. This is just to help you decide what to watch first.

All of the suggestions by JosephJoestar01 and Scoobydew are perfectly spot on! I'll just add to the titles he already suggested.

I'm not really familiar what has and hasn't been dubbed (I'm a sub-man myself) but there are quite a few titles here (at Crunchyroll) that fit your bill...

Yona of the Dawn
Chaika the Coffin Princess
The World is Still Beautiful
Sunday Without God
Galilei Donna (scifi actioner with a subtext of romance and 3 female leads)
The Princess and Pilot
The Pilot's Love Song
Attack on Titan (scifi monster-movie with extremely strong female characters)
Interlude
Voices from a Distant Star (short movie)
Blade and Soul (no romance but three strong female protagonists)
Aldnoah.zero (scifi but both fast-paced and strong female characters with a definite subtext of romance)
RWBY (technically not anime but anime-influenced with the 4 mains being strong females all involved in romantic subplots at times)
The Irregular at Magic High School (definitely strong female characters with a great story and romantic sub-stories. Scifi/Fantasy/action)

There are tons of others available at other sites too (Funimation, The Anime Network, Daisuki, Neon Alley, Hulu, Viewster, Viki, Tubi TV, Crackle, Veoh, Youtube) so you'll have a large selection to choose from .
