Cross Game probably has the biggest quality disparity between the animation and the show itself of what I've seen. It's probably the best sports slice of life series that I've watched. Really, really enjoyed the hell out of that series.

Some people like the art in it because of a sort of retro appeal. But I don't particularly enjoy 80's/90's anime myself, so for something that came out in 2009, I just find it to be pretty lackluster.

Cross Game! I'm glad someone mentioned it. I don't particularly dislike or like the 80s/90s anime animation, though I do kind of find myself drawn to manga drawn in that art style.

Can confirm. Fantastic series.

Although despite the simple art-style, the animation choreography is very well done-

Kill la kill doesn't have bad animation, it's just studio Trigger's style..

It actually did have some serious animation issues in some of the last episodes due to time/budget constraints.

And the bad animation in episode 4 was supposed to be a homage to episode 4 of Gurren Lagann.

Good god...

But overall, yes the animation generally was quite good.

Could it be the Yamato Takeru no Mikoto shrine!? That's most likely it!!

(Amazing simply due to how terrible it is)

I always thought that Slayers needed much better animation despite being a favorite of mine.

I'm just going to say that Slayers was more of the design of the show. Not that it was the best animation. But it was also designed with these quirks in mind.

It pretty much evoked the manga

And we are talking about 1995 anime here. Anime has improved dramatically since then.

I'm going to throw one of my personal favorites under the buss here.

Gundam.

Pretty much all the early Gundam series were just bad in animation quality. They were rushed, lots of color mistakes. Re-used animations, etc.

But, much like slayers, that was also part of the charm. I am just glad Gundam animation has grown exponentially since then. (we won't count Reconguista here )

all these shows mentioned look way better quality than the animation of world trigger... well except for the gundam post a bit above me.

there are worse scenes, especially when they're (not) moving, but yeeeeah... worst quality anime i have seen, even if there are some moments when things are animated with an actually normal amount of quality. but theyre rare.

I'm going to say Million Doll. Okay, it definitely wasn't what I think anyone would call amazing, but it actually had some pretty good characters and a different twist on the idol type story. Damn it was fugly though.

I'll have to mention the original adaptation of my favorite manga of all time. The 1997 anime of Berserk had really lackluster animation, and it looks even worse when you compare it to Rurouni Kenshin which came out even before in 1996. It gets a little better as the show progresses but the first episodes were pretty bad, most of the fights are just still frames with sound effects. You can also tell it had a very low budget when a character walks right under the sun but still doesn't cast a shadow on the ground.

But this doesn't mean it's a bad show. It's an incredibly faithful adaptation of the manga, and it does a lot of things better than the new movies. I think that the movies are only superior to the original anime when it comes to the Eclipse and the ending, which at least wasn't a total "fuck you go read the manga" type of ending like in the tv series.

I have no GIFs to post, but my love of the first Sailor Moon anime does not disguise how amusingly low-budget that show is (... not unlike original Gundam, as seen above).

I think of scenes like this every time someone pines for hand-drawn mechs instead of CGI.

I'll wager that even if one sees a series with hand-drawn mechs, it is being backed up by a wire-frame CG render to make certain the art stays on model.

To be fair, Your Oldness, every now and then, the hand-drawn days gave us a VOTOMS or a Dragonar instead of a budget-starved original Gundam.

Couldn't find an appropriate GIF, but while the writing in Trigun is pretty timeless.

It hasn't aged too well in the art department.
