I did donate to The Sierra Club for a while, but they literally spam you for tons of other donations when you start doing it.

I got sick of that, so when I had to change my debit card I didn't bother signing back up.

That being said, I'm not opposed to donating at all.

Yes, I donate to Animal Aid Unlimited and I work in the medical field, every once a year we raise money for our Children Are the Future campaign. I'm also a volunteer at an animal sanctuary just an hour and a half from my city. Where I clean and feed baby goats and miniature horses.

When I get rid of things from my home I donate them to clothing stores or church foundations that help the homeless.

In the past, I have used the Charity Navigator to check out charities that have asked me for money. http://www.charitynavigator.org/ This is an independent watchdog group that audits charities.

One thing a lot of people forget when donating to the latest "cause" whether it be an earthquake, hurricane, or tornado victims. Need doesn't go away when there isn't front page news. That's one reason I budget my charitable donations to go out monthly all year long. Also, money isn't the only thing that helps. I survived Hurricane Katrina. I was living in Mississippi at the time. Things like the Tide Loads of Hope program where they set up laundries in tractor trailers helped fill a big need. http://www.slate.com/articles/life/my_goodness/2010/09/the_spin_cycle.html

I'm not that impressive. I give a little to charity here and there because I feel it's a good thing to do, but honestly, I'm far more impressed with quite a few of the other people who've been posting in this thread.

Anyone who's seen the amount of alcohol I go through in a month knows I could probably afford to be more generous than I am.

They are right though. You are amazing for contributing to the forums with a topic like this. Everyone who takes the time out to give a little is a good person. As someone already commented, it doesn't always have to be with money. Even though I do participate, just reading the topic subject alone made me reflect on sharing some positive energy today.
