Mayu Tomita, 20, received nearly two dozen wounds to her neck and chest.
Police arrested Tomohiro Iwazaki, 27, at the scene. He is reported to have said he was angry because Ms Tomita returned a gift he had sent her.
The singer had reportedly complained to police about the fan last month.
Japanese media says she contacted police after Mr Iwazaki started posting obsessive comments about her on Twitter and other social media sites.

When police arrested him after the attack, he is reported to have told them that he ambushed her at the station and asked her about the gift.
"I lost my temper because she didn't clearly answer," he reportedly said.
Ms Tomita had been working as a pop star and actor while completing her college studies.
In 2014, two teenage members of Japanese girl group AKB48 were attacked by a man wielding a saw at one of the band's regular meet-the-fans events.

I don't think you can call yourself a fan and do that to the person you say you are a fan of.

Given how crazy the standards of conduct Japanese pop stars / idols, etc are held too I'm surprised this doesn't happen more often.

Joining a nunnery has less rules.

yeah, also for some reason there is quite a "few" H-titles that does focus a bit on this that is both .. yeah violent and sexual some are quite good overall but I guess they do take some ideas of cases like these and with younger girls (seeing as there are some quite young to 12-13 and around that who gets into such community or have to deal with such groupes/fans).

I just wonder if the age difference or atleast in looks still makes it quite hard for them or easier for those others to "go a bit too far".
As with quite many asians don't really get that much older in looks (either by height or facial and etc)

I'm not sure how this follows.

How does more rules of conduct for stars and idols lead to more frequent brutal attacks?

I remember when the tennis star Monica Seles was stabbed on court during a match. There weren't much of any strict public rules for them.

The rules of conduct for a Japanese idol/pop star are basically all about maintaining the illusion of purity for the fans. They must forever be the perfect untouched girl who loves them. Any deviation from that and you risk your career ( or worse ). It seems to breed a kind of scary entitlement with fans.

I mean, this guy knifed her because she returned a gift.

With the way they are about their popstars and even seiyuu, I"m surprised no one's flat out killed someone yet.
