Hah, if I ever go to Italy the return flight won't be able to take off the runway I'll have eaten so much.

Honestly, Japan is very low on my places-I'd-like-to-visit-before-I-die list. Which is to say, it isn't even on it. The food is only so-so in my opinion and the alcohol is blech. (Yes, my stomach gets a large say in my travel destinations.)

Already been there twice, might go back for vacation if I can raise the money.

Btw, you don't want to admit you're into anime over there. You WILL be ostracized by quite a few people, I guarantee it! Lived there for two years and quickly realized you DON'T talk about anime over there, unless a Japanese person brings it up, which won't be that often. If you say you're going to Akihabara, nicknamed the "Electric Town" (because it has every electronic convenience item under the sun, not just figures, anime, and manga), tell people you're going shopping for a camera or printer or something, instead of Japanese cartoons, comics, or figures. I recommend going to the museums in Ueno Park and, if you go when the cherry blossom trees are starting to rain down blossoms in April, go to the little park behind the main museum building and, believe me, IT WILL BE BREATHTAKING! Also, visit Himeji Castle if you can, there's tons of other places I can recommend, you can respond to my post and I'll let you know about plenty more places and events. OHHH, one thing I almost forgot! If you go to Japan at the end of JULY, you MUST go see the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival on the Sumida River in Tokyo! It's the LARGEST fireworks competition and performance in the world! They make complex shapes in the sky out of fireworks and it runs for a LONG time, during which you can get food from the food stands and watch the fireworks from Asakusa neighborhood! Don't miss it!

I'll have to save up quite a bit before I go but the soonest I could see myself going is next summer. I've been studying Japanese for a bit now and am making progress, but I'm still far from fluent. So I'd like to also study more before I go. I know knowing the language at least a bit more would help make the trip their a lot better.

I'll go once because there's is other places I want to visit like Giza, Machu Picchu, London, Paris, Sydney, The Great Barrier Reef, Venice, and Istanbul. I want to get out and explore the world to see what's beyond where I stay right now because you can't have fishbowl dreams, you've got to be able to step out of your comfort zone, and see and try things you never knew you liked. If/When I get there I will respect the culture and if anything, keep myself away from anime, and try to learn proper etiquette of the culture like I will with the others. This thing called anime is a blessing and a curse for that country.

Been there already for school, Japan is a great place to visit, but not to live in my opinion.

Place is to congested around the city areas (which to me is where the fun is at) people watch you funny as a foreigner, especially if you're black like me, though I think it's more out of curiosity, not many blacks in Japan.. when I see one, they're usually as surprised as I am lol.

Culture is way off compared to the U.S, things we in the west would see as offensive or sexist are usually baked in as the culture's norms, though some of you probably know that from watching anime.

The people are nice though, and wouldn't dare get up in your face and say something mean, but I always get this feeling that their true intentions are spouted behind close doors... in other words, the Japanese people seem closed off in a robotic way, like they're programmed to be nice, and it seems forced to me.

But otherwise to that, had some good times, made a friend their too.

Not a bad country. I would just never live there.

Btw, anime obsession is not looked up to highly over there like many on this bored may think.

The Japanese see themselves a professional and conservative society, they hate weabs...

While Manga artist and creators are highly regarded, they still carry them selves far more professionally than your average eccentric nut from other country's entertainment industries such as Hollywood.

...i...don't see anything wrong with any of that...

I would like to go to Japan some day, but I have no idea when. I would prefer to go with someone and know the language a bit, as well. I just have to find that person to go with, I guess!

Initially, when I first started getting interested in Japanese culture I was attracted to it because where I live there is only really 1 "big" city and it's not that big, so I was very keen on going to Akihabara and other such attractions. However, aging happens, and I have become much more interested in the countryside, unique architecture, deeply ingrained rituals, and other such aspects of their society. It fuels my exploratory side and makes me want to go on an adventure, I guess you could say.

I went earlier this year back in April. Had a blast I'm probably going back next year around the same time. Everyone here saying that they can't go because of money is just a bad excuse. It took me a year to save up $2,000 and we stayed for 10 days and went to a Soapland twice. The airline tickets where $600 round trip from LA and the 2 bedroom hostel was only $215 a person for 9 nights. Got a suica card for traveling on the subway put $100 on it, bought gifts had fun and still had around $100 left over before we left. It's really not that expensive If you look around.
