Well then, perhaps I can help.

Music, art, anime, and entertainment in its many forms are all things used specifically for their ability to produce particular states of mind. They are meant to put you in a particular head space, altering what's there to bring about a change in perspective or feeling. Music is mind-altering. Friendship is mind-altering. Food is mind-altering. Your mind is altered in innumerable ways simply through the course of living life. Drugs can produce this quickly and efficiently.

Shopping-sprees, gambling and extreme-thrills also provide a quick jolt of endorphins to the brain, and it's possible to lose a fortune and your family developing unhealthy addictions to those too, without putting anything into your system.

Due to the lack of breathable gases, sniffing inhalants is also said to produce the same relaxed-brain euphoria drowning victims claim to feel before the end, and like the kids say, anything that makes you feel good...

Yep.

Were you just adding to my point? I don't really get what you're commenting on here...

So I'll just clarify in case you're misunderstanding me somehow. Something being mind altering doesn't make it good, but it doesn't make it bad. I reckon heroin feels fucking awesome, but I'll never try it. It does a hell of a lot of other shit that makes you feel well on the opposite side of awesome (so I've heard). Drugs, gambling, etc. are rather against the well-being of your general well-adjusted person because you can achieve a lot of the same effects without most of the drawbacks just living your everyday life.

Ranwolf's comment bothered me, not because it was anti-drug, but because it was fucking stupid. Imagine if someone was talking about how awesome his hiking trip was and I replied "I'll never understand weaklings that need to look at mountains to feel awe." Yeah, they don't need to look at mountains, but it's pretty god-damned efficient. And talking about the chance of injury while hiking would probably seem irrelevant to an avid hiker. They've decided that its worth the risk. Most people decide against general use of drugs because the risks are a hell of a lot higher than those associated with hiking.

I've no problem with saying "drug use is usually against your best interests." But saying "I will never understand"? It's like, 'fuck, did you even try?' It's not very difficult to figure out why people do drugs. The other thing that bothered me was his sort of implicit connotation that anyone that tries to alter their state of mind was a weakling--as though whatever's in your head is what ought to be in your head. If there was a drug that could give me instant knowledge of, let's say, the writings of Immanuel Kant, I'd say "oh, that's fucking awesome." If that same drug gave me a 50/50 chance of getting cancer, I'd say--yeah, I'm not gonna take it, but I get why people might want to.

Yep. Adding to it, and thus clarifying the point for any "But it's not a drug, so it's okay!" protests.
