Generally I ignore the overall score any particular series gets, as it never seems to be particularly useful - so, so many shows seem to sit around the 7-8 mark, regardless of how good, bad, or indifferent they actually are.

Instead I read some of the positive reviews and some of the negative reviews, to see what individual people have praised or derided the show about. If the negative reviews complain about things I don't like, or the positive reviews praised it for things that don't interest me or are semi-illiterate, then I probably won't bother watching it. If the negative reviews are semi-illiterate or complaining about trivial things, and the positive reviews check at least some of my 'yes please' boxes, then I'll probably check it out.

MAL is bad for everything but keeping track of the anime you've seen. The people on MAL, especially the forums, are retarded.

I only use MAL for keeping track of anime I have watched and I don't rate anime myself.

6-7 usually very mediocre anime
7-8 okayish but there are some gems there as well
8+ you will most likely enjoy watching these and generally anime everyone has recommended to you at some point.

Considering Konosuba is sitting at a comfortable 8 and it turned out to be one of the blandest and most forgettable anime i've ever seen?...yea not very good.

I pretty much do exactly what Ananisapta does. While scores can't actually emphasize the feelings of why someone rated a show the way they did, reviews can. I, myself, rate shows based on their appeal to me and how much I like them. It doesn't mean I'm rating them wrong if you disagree just that our tastes differ. Look at Siskel and Ebert; more often than not they disagreed on whether a movie should get a thumbs up or thumbs down.
