The appeal of the show is a multitude of factors.

1) It has a really slow tonal and pace burn, but keep with it and it pays off tremendously right around the Yorknew City Arc. It starts off a tad bit slow and pretty upbeat and cheerful. By around the 40th episode there's a drastic tone shift from "Wow, what a fun, upbeat show" to "Oh god...holy shit, did that just happen?" Pacing, especially in the Hunter Exam with the phases in the tower and on the island, is fairly slow. Not One Piece bad, but still.

2) Gon and Killua, our two MC's, aren't always in the center of the conflict or are the resolvers of said conflict. While these two kids are incredibly powerful, they realize that they are merely small sharks in an ocean with megalodons. Whenever they do have to fight and resolve the conflict, aka "Gon fights the big baddie of the arc", it really only happens once, and even then our heroes really have to out-think their opponents and truly earn their victories. '

3) It's variation in story arcs. This show drastically changes up it's episode formula from arc to arc. You get arcs ranging from shonen battle tournaments, video game/fantasy esque battles, a crime thriller, a political arc, and a small scale war.

4) Madhouse put an incredible amount of production and polish into this show, especially considering it's length. You will be very hard pressed to find a long running shonen that has this level of polish to not only the animation, but to the music as well (which there is several hours of).

Those are just some reasons I can think of off the top of my head as to why people, and myself, love this show. It's easily in my top 5, alongside greats such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Cowboy Bebop.

This show contains one of my all-time favorite fight scenes (Netero vs. Meruem), so if you're into that kind of shit I'd stick it out. I too thought the show wasn't my style at first (seemed kind of childish) but it is truly an amazing anime.

I also liked the fight, but only the fight. The series left me with an impression of "How the hell did I watch 148 episodes of this thing". I don't hate the series, still reading the manga up to date, but the way it goes from the one event to another is confusing, and it builds a tension leading to nowhere, much like in Yorknew City arc, where I thought that the story would have a completely different turn of events. I was hyped for a clash between Gon's group and the bodyguards and the Phantom Troupe, but it never happened. Chimera Ants was better, but still, the way that Meruem and his Royal guard (except Pitou) died was a quick finish! Probably Togashi got bored and just killed them.

I am one of those rare people that actually liked the first arcs of the series.
I thing that HxH 2011 introduced main characters really well and I also thing that Hunter Exam was that kind of adventure that I always wanted to see.
However I do agree that the phasing of this anime is bad and they dragged first arcs for too long.
The beginning doesn't feel very intense and it is pretty light hearted, even when people are dying in the exam. It is only later when the series turn very intense and serious.

But worry not because HxH does have very strong cards under its sleeve.

+ This anime makes more sense than many other battle shonen animes (like Bleach, Naruto... etc).
+ No filler episodes. Even the movies are not really filler.
+ I love how super powers works in this anime. Like almost every super power of this anime makes some form of sense.
+ Battles are extremely tactical. Staregy overpowers strength in this anime.
+ Semibeautiful animation quality.
+ The frienship between Gon, and Killua (and Hisoka) makes HxH very entertaining.

However Hunter x Hunter is not a perfect anime. It haves it's flaws. Like many of the characters doesn't get enough character development. Other flaw is that HxH takes very long breaks. Right now we are waiting years for the next episode to come.
Also as I said before, the phasing of this anime is bad. However it is not nearly bad as in other shonen battle animes like Bleach and Naruto for an example.

So if you have free time and you don't mind watching long to get it all, then continue watching.
However if this anime feels overhelmingly slow, then stop watching it and watch Ushio and Tora instead.

I fell in love with the characters, and the stories kept going up in quality. There's one long arc toward the end where some could have been cut, but overall there's some great storytelling.

Not sure how well I conveyed a lot of my thoughts there but I thought I'd just chime in and try and give a bit more of an idea of why this show is so well regarded. I think the show does so many great things that even if those things aren't what you particularly might enjoy or find compelling, it's still possible to understand why people love it.

I wanna thank you for taking the time to respond. It is great seeing all these posts and stuff here.

I agree with you. Even though I may not enjoy certain aspects I can understand why other people are enjoying them. Which is rather refreshing over all I think.

When I go into a series I am not looking for any big serious tale, I'm just looking for something which can entertain me. And my personal definition of being entertained generally comes from the action scenes in a series and the Humor of a series. If the series is lacking one then it can still be very entertaining, but if it is lacking both then I have a hard time getting into it.
Which Hunter x Hunter is lacking in the Humor currently (All the characters are so serious, my two faves so far are Kurapika because of his occasional joke, and Hisoka because of just his general demeanor being rather entertaining) and the action scenes never last long when they do happen. It's too realistic for me, I guess that is the best way of putting it.

Like with the Authors previous work, YYH, I am still fairly early in that myself (Maybe Episode 20? a Friend is showing me it otherwise I would be much much further if not finished. But I wanna watch it with the friend), the parts I really enjoy about the series is the Humor of it, especially the sarcasticness of the Main character and the General way Boton always acts, also enjoying the occasional action elements to the series and the general 90s Vibe it has.

But I can see why so many other people are enjoying Hunter x Hunter. The series does have potential and if you enjoy the more serious elements of a tale then I can see why people like it. There are a lot of people who enjoy having that realistic element to the show.

My only digs about this show/book is that it gets too exposition heavy with all these exposition, math, philosophies, politics, yadda yadda... It's like sometimes the show doesn't know what it wants to be.

My love for the series mainly derives from the friendship between Gon & Killua, it's the greatest friendship ever portrayed in anime imo.

Honesty, I watched the 2011 version, and I'm going to watch the the other one someday just too busy but t he 2011 version is amazing ,the fights are cool and yeah the exams is what gets people into it and later on when you find certain characters it's amazing. Because there are so many cool people in it. Good story line, good acting and a lot of the characters have a deep background story. And there are some wicked people too

Let me start by saying I do not mind watching the series. I checked it out not too long ago because of how many people kept saying it was amazing and that it was a good replacement if you liked the authors other work Yu Yu Hakusho. But, I am currently on Episode 16 of Hunter x Hunter, and although it is entertaining, I'm finding maybe only the occasional thing has made me laugh so far and the Characters for the most part don't feel as interesting as everyone was leading me to think they were going to be.

What is it about the series that everyone seems to be praising, does it get better as the story arcs go on? Because so far this first story arc is dull (Them passing the Hunter Exam), I'm feeling it is dragging on way too long and most of the characters which looked semi-interesting never really got expanded upon before they were kicked out of the exam or just don't get enough screen time.

I personally did not like the first arc. The series gets better and better the more you watch. I personally think it has the best character development and it's the darkest series when compared to other shounen. The Chimera Ant Arc is pretty damn epic, and I love the twist on the villain. Also, which series are you watching? there's the 1999 and the 2011 versions. The 2011 one is much better.

The first arc is probably the weakest, up until the end.

I like Hunter x Hunter because it does things differently than most other Shonen. Not everything is explained and sometimes stories just end, anti climatically at points (Zoldyk and Heavens Arena arc). Characters feel like they have their own concerns to worry about other than what the main protagonists are concerned with and are doing things in the background we don't even see. It's a world in of itself and that adds more quality to what Gon and Killua go through.

Saying anything more would be spoiler, but later on fights become really creative and that's another aspect of the show I like.

In the 2011 version, the early episodes and Hunter Exam Arc felt a little rushed. This is coming from someone who watched 1999 version. It may be a bit late now, but I would have recommended watching the 1999 version up until the end of the Hunter Exam Arc, then switch to 2011. The 1999 Hunter Exam episodes gave a deeper insight into the main and side characters. Though be warned that the 1999 version is slower paced that 2011.

As others have said, the series really takes off during the Yorknew City Arc. The previous arcs give hints upon the depths of the world, but it is in Yorknew that those layers really start to show.

Speaking of Yu Yu Hakusho, I don't think it would be good to think of Hunter X Hunter as a replacement. For one, humor/comedy was a very strong aspect of Yu Yu Hakusho. While there are some funny parts, Hunter X Hunter leans a lot more toward the serious side.

I think so too!
It gets more interesting when we reach the parts with them having Nen
