I would say fanservice but I guess I can't. Uh... I suppose it's because there is a lot of anime that would be more geared towards men. Things like Unhappy which is 4 girls in a slice of life setting. Although there are anime with the opposite, 4 boys, the afore mentioned setting is seen far more often. (I don't dislike any of these shows I'm watching Unhappy and Pan De Peace ) I don't really know. I like anime cause it can give me a great plot and something I absolutely love, animation that is A.Beautiful looking or B.Adorable. Well whatever it's not like anyone cares about the male to female ratio of anime fans. Probably. It won't affect the shows that come out. Probably.

I know some women that like anime more than men.

Anime was usually catered to male audiences in the distant past, but now there is content for both male and female audiences.

Even so, a lot of slice of life moe shows are catered towards male otaku, so the male audience is still strong, but women viewers have some shows to watch. An example would be a shoujo-romance series.

Weird assumption of most of these posts: That women don't watch stuff that isn't explicitly female-targeting.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure actually has a pretty high female viewerbase in Japan. In fact, female viewers apparently ranked it higher than male ones in polls. Just let that sink in for a moment.

I'm still completely unsure that "more men like anime than women". I think it's just the same general thing a lot of geek hobbies end up with - women who like anime don't aggressively move into anime message boards or communities. Most of the anime fans I've met over my life have been other women, honestly.

(also, people bringing up Shoujo-romance as pandering to women and not defaulting to the obvious parallel that is Free? For shame.)

I don't know how the situation in other countries but I don't think that there are so much more male then female anime fans around here. It's just easier to spot the male ones. I've never seen a single women wearing a fanshirt. But I've seen a lot of men wearing for example One Piece shirts. Some female anime lovers are only visible when they cosplay and some wear lolita clothing (but not everyone who wears lolita clothing likes anime, some of them just like the style) but that's it.
What I've personally experienced when I meet a woman who is into anime is that she's usually a bigger fan then the men I know but as I wrote that's just personal experience.

Not sure if that is entirely true. Honestly, you might just be engaging with anime that a mostly male audience enjoys like your Shonen or Seinen material. Don't forget there are heaps of Shojo and Josei things out there. Often they are outside of our circle so we can't see what other demographics enjoy. But from personal experience I haven't found there to be a difference in anime enjoyment between men and women...

People just enjoy different things and a woman may not like AoT but she may enjoy something else like Utena.

I like anime, and I'm a girl. Most of the people I know IRL who like anime are also girls. It's a small subject group, albeit.
In the UK it isn't cool to like it, but I don't particularly care about being 'cool' so I'm quite open about it all. It's the same with gaming, which I also dip into. For guys, its just a little more accepted than for girls so they're maybe more open and therefore likely to join things like CR? Just a theory, and probably not a good one since things like this tend to be anonymous anyway.

I don't expect it's the same everywhere though. WHO KNOWS.

I ADORE AoT. I couldn't get through one episode of Utena. It's more a personality thing than a gender thing I think.

My original thoughts: I like some anime more than I like women, but I like some women more than I like anime. It just depends.

After reading the OP: Oh. I didn't know men like it more. I know more women who like anime than men, so I just assumed that held true for the overall population.

More often than not, it is aimed at men. Simple as that.

Stereotypes.

The stereotype that all anime is muscly action stuff (same for comics), and the stereotype that you're less of a woman if you like that.

And the stereotype that you're less of a man if you like things that aren't muscly action stuff, which makes a lot of the content providers put stupid shonen things front-and-center (to keep that audience), so you have to look harder to find the things that aren't that.

But actually... there are actually usually more girls into anime, I think? Like, teenage girls who are into Ouran and things like that (I guess now it would be Free! and Haikyuu), outnumber the stereotypical muscle-action guys...

In Japan, in Akihabara, there are mostly the moe otaku guys who wanna buy a thousand of everything with their waifu on it ... but go to Ikebukuro and it's the fujoshi looking for their OTP. So either way...

Definitely a personality thing. I wasn't trying to say all women dislike AoT or that they like Utena. I was just trying to express that you may be watching content that proportionally appeals less to the female audience so they make up a smaller proportion of the audience for that particular anime. This seems common for Shonen but it's not a hard and fast rule, it's definitely about social circles and influence.

It depends on which region of the Internet you visit. In my case, because I read and write fanfic for anime / manga, in those areas of the Internet, the fan base is overwhelmingly female, and I'm kind of the odd one out. I was genuinely surprised to see so many male fans when I joined up here at Crunchyroll.

Depends entirely on the genre of anime you're talking about.
