It really is a stupid question. There are no facts supporting this assertion. Industry people have stated that the mix is fairly equal, at least in the US and Europe. Although it might be different in other countries, in which case it's a question of those countries cultures, not gender.

There are also other factors involved, a great many!

For example, more writers are male than female. Unlike the whole "liking" thing, that's far more measurable statistic. Additionally, it's far easier to assume that men write for men more so than they would for women. This creates a lot of work intended for male audiences.

You can argue that anime is being catered to men more than women. It doesn't change whether or not one demographic likes it more or not, but it does affect who jump into the medium and how common they are.

I'd say that female fans tend to have quite a great field day when content representing their interests come out. Sure, Male-focused shows can appeal to women, but an exceptional show and a targeted one can be one in the same. Shows like Fruits Basket, Oran Host Club, and Free! are crucial to the creation and growth of the Fandom among female fans.

While men are getting a One Punch Man, Parasyte, and My Hero Academia every season, with sprinkles of panty shots and breasts with pick-a-blue haired guy and pink haired girl anime every 3 months.

There is a large difference between a character that is used as a self insert living in an ideal fantasy world and a character that is created to exist as that ideal. Women can be hostile to other women, just like how pre-civil rights there were African Americans against the movement. There were also women against the first wave of feminism that fought for women's rights to an education and to vote. Just because you are a part of a group doesn't mean you align with particular ideologies of said group.

You're being unnecessary hostile towards someone else's opinion. Really, it's just their thoughts no need to jump down their throat and act all pissy. Can't you behave more maturely?

In no way was and is it my intention to emulate myself as some kind symbol of pristine decorum. Yes, I was immature. You've established an air of superiority over me. Now what? A wee bit of hypocrisy. Honestly, I don't see much difference between my behavior and your's. We've both proven to be unnecessarily hostile and immature; you merely choose to be more passive aggressive. Immaturity unite?

Bear in mind that the woman I had responded to hosted a diatribe centered around perceived "hostility" towards women, and that myself and other women are supposedly inherently vulnerable to fictitious depictions. Yes, I'm going to be irritated, just as she was clearly salty. My response was quite in the same vein of overreaction as she's demonstrated. Let's not pretend that CR is the British Parliament, or something.

Basically, tell me why the difference between male to female ratio is so different in respect those who watch anime and read manga.

What would you suggest to reach a higher female audience to begin watching anime and reading manga?

Give me a reason other than fan service or elaborate how they can decrease fan servicing.
I'm interested in knowing your opinions :D

Why all people like anime is mostly dependent on culture and personality. However, there has been quite the negative stereotype surounding male "otaku" types that has surfaced from time to time - the bespectacled fat slob who cuddles dakimakura and has an idol/anime/game shrine known as their room - and women will more likely than not think they're above that (for multiple reasons) and that's why they tend to hide their interests in anime if they have them...so as not to be perceived as such. Otherwise, they're just more subtle about it (but I think someone's said that in this thread already).

Higher female audience? Bring the bishonen, bring the fujoshi coming, bring out the merch but retain premium story quality. Then again, that seems to be happening a lot more than usual lately...presumably because around the 90s and around the time of Free!, people only just started to unlock the true potential of the female fanbase and women started to appreciate and like flaunting their anime pride.

Decrease fan service? Well, it's fine to pander to a guy's gaze, but/and do some pandering to the female gaze too. (I think that's where Free! and multiple shonen succeeded in dragging the female fanbase along with it.) If not, then create more situations that can be used as cannon fodder for a stray-minded fujoshi (if you're purely talking about fan service for guys) or elevate the overall storytelling and visual-making standards of the industry.

Oh I don't know, my daughter is quite a rabid anime fan and has gotten a number of her female friends hooked on anime. Whereas I'm the only guy I know who's into it and I'm pretty casual really, though I've been watching anime for a long time. As to why she's more into it than me...well age for one. She's a teenager and full of energy, while I'm in my mid 40's. She's also willing to try almost any category of anime (except hentai...which I wouldn't allow anyway) whereas I'm far choosier about it...always have been really.

The way I see it is, women have more things to choose from like shopping or something, and most women prefer socializing with other people/women.
Whereas men, there are fewer things to choose from and most prefer not to socialize, so anime/gaming/star wars is the perfect hobby for that.

Having said that, I feel like there are equal female fans nowadays, what with there being lots of those all male idol shows, and BL shows that cater to them. Also this forum feels like there are more female posters than male...

You probably need to back up the initial claim that more men like anime than women before asking why, because as other posters have said, the basic premise of this question is flawed. In my experience, anime fans are pretty evenly split between men and women, but with some differences in what they watch and how they do it.

Obviously, there are some anime that attract a largely male or largely female audience, so you're mainly following shows that are narrowly aimed at straight men (like Prisma Illya or the various battle harem shows) you might come to the conclusion that anime fans are mostly men. Likewise, someone only following shamelessly girl-pandering shows (like Bungou Stray Dogs or the various male idol shows) might get the impression that anime is mainly for women. In my experience, though, the vast majority of shows have a fairly even split of male and female fans, even stuff like Love Live or Attack on Titan that you might expect to hit only one gender.

One difference I've noticed is that the cohort of fans who power through tons of anime and follow every season tends to be mostly male. Meanwhile, in my experience female fans tend to watch fewer shows but stay with them for longer and obsess more about them. That might be a feature of there being fewer shows aimed at women, but my hunch is that it's a function of the difference in fan culture between male-dominated communities like MAL and /a/ and female-dominated ones like tumblr.

If you're asking why there seems to be more male anime fans and more female manga fans, while that isn't my impression, I suppose an explanation could be that while a lot of female-targeted shows are adapted from manga (and so, the fans of those are also going to be reading manga), a not insignificant portion of the strictly male-aimed material is adapted from LNs and VNs, which would bring more guys to anime but not to manga, since 'their' stuff isn't adapted from manga in the first place.

well aside from fanservice aspects less women, at least, before geek became chic, wanted to refrain from engaging in what could considered to be uncool activities, such as watching anime (a lot of people will say thats applicable to cartoons as well), being interested in sci-fi shows or movies, and other pieces of fandom that were once considered to be geeky, however, in the past few years, it's become considerably less socially 'embarrassing' to associate with stuff that used to more often than not label you as a 'weirdo'

me? i never cared in the first place, i was always into that nerdy shit.

im not sure, but i think aot has a bigger female fanbase than male fanbase. not just the females who like horror/action/etcetc but also the fujoshi fanbase is huge with aot.

and you hear a lot of "fanboys" talking about aot like "lol its not that great, moeblob or bigtittie anime #2346 was much better" or "this anime from 40 years ago was better aot sucks lulz"
