Which do you think is the most powerful catalyst for change, the Sword, the Pen, or Example.

I personally feel like each have their time and place.

They all do have their certain achievements. A man was killed, and the world went to war. A book was written, and millions died. A guy tried to show people a better way, and centuries of war resulted.

So it's hard to pick just one.

I dunno. Swords can easily kill someone physically. Words can easily change someone mentally. Example can uh... give a good or bad example. I guess it depends. If words and example can't move someone a sword can change that. If you can't beat them with a sword but they're weak to words then you can change with that. Likewise with example. I dunno im an idiot. Take basically everything I say with a grain of salt cause I'm stupid.

Pen, religion is a good proof but let's not get there .

Perhaps example could as well, the amount of followers in the world is rather impressive, even ignoring that, human learn from example every day if not every hour which I feel like can trump A pen;s influence.

The pen has had a larger effect. A sword might be able to kick-start something through one well placed act of violence, but written ideas will stick around for decades, or even centuries, and will continue to influence people. The writings of the enlightenment, the scientific revolution, and the renaissance have had powerful effects over the course of history. And all the largest and most devastating wars (thirty years war, WW1, WW2, etc) can trace their origins to written ideas that people decided were worth killing each other over.

If the pen is mightier than the sword, why do actions speak louder than words?

The sword is because fear inflicts change that is absolute.

Pen.

Commanders hold "pens" to manipulate armies of "swords."

Because being loud doesn't mean being mighty.

And they're idioms. There's an idiom for everything. Except maybe child molestation. And rape.

Actually, there's probably a lot of behaviors that don't have idioms to justify them.

Also, I'd say pen, mostly because it has the widest reach. Example is limited to changing only those that can see you. The sword is limited to however long your sword is. Books can be anywhere but North Korea. et al.
