Rock climbing, specialty meals, television and recording studios! Must be nice.

I was actually looking at the worst prisons in the world a few days ago.

I have friends who work in prisons. One's a guard at a Texas prison. The other teaches youth offenders in an Arizona prison.

That is the usual response that poorly informed people get to watching these films, and nobody actually commit the crimes they say they will do, because, guess what, humans aren't inherently anti-social. Hard prisons only result in harder prisoners, because humans will always attempt to adapt to- and overcome their environment, so hard prisons and harder prison sentences doesn't actually deter crime, but make crime happen more frequently, and in the more extreme; the ultimate recipe for failure, making rehabilitation close to impossible. Treat a human like a beast, and they will be a beast. Treat a human like it's human, and it will be human. Prod a human, and it will expect to be prodded. Show a human that they can do better, and they will yield better results. It's what happens when psychology is made an organized attempt to improve the human condition, and society, instead of treating psychology like a joke.

Blah, blah, blah, revenge masked as justice, blah, blah, blah, it's just what they deserve, blah, blah, blah, continue to make a martyr out of people who were cornered and made to make bad choices, blah, blah, blah, wonder why crime gets worse, blah, blah, blah, wonder why criminals get worse, blah, blah, blah.

Tired of explaining this shit already http://www.businessinsider.com/why-norways-prison-system-is-so-successful-2014-12?r=US&IR=T&IR=T

I tend to agree with this. There is a saying in the Marine Corps that the reason Marines are often treated so poorly and live in such shitty conditions is because they are like dogs.... if you chain them up and beat them, they'll bite people. Like, in other words, being treated like garbage often makes people aggressive. Whether or not this is a deliberate strategy or simply something that is said as a joke, I do believe those shitty conditions are part of what makes Marines what they are.

And, when we're talking about prisons, this is often the same scenario. People go do time and come back worse. And people don't seem to understand that it is because of the conditions of prisons and how prisoners are treated.
