Posting here since the other thread got deleted. (I don't want to waste what I took time on to write )

I do know some words and recognize more, but I want to really learn it as well. I've always found East Asian culture and so fascinating. I wanted to learn Chinese, but after discovering anime I got really into Japanese and Japan. But unfortunately it's not really that popular here, so it's kind of difficult to find a place to learn it. We have bachelor and master degree at university, but since I have no clue what I want to do later in my life, I don't want to take that risk to choose something I have to do for 3 years and maybe not being able to use. Buut, I found a good folk high school in Denmark where you can both learn Japanese aand martial art! I really want to go there after high school, if I'm not being called to the army first that is.

Just a bit since it's the only exposure I've got to it.

I pick up a few words and phrases, but I don't go around telling people I speak Japanese... lol

To truly become fluent you gotta practice it with others, visit or live in the country, take lots of classes, study super hard.. And especially for such a hard language

My initial interest in the language came from videogames given that when I was growing up that was where they were "all" made. When I got into anime later on that spurred my interest to be sure but the more I heard the language the more I really started to like it "on it's own terms." I didn't and still don't have any real driving reason to learn outside of personal interest, but I'm still learning regardless.

I originally wanted to learn because I couldn't understand those anime magazines and books that I used to buy lol. I took a course that taught me hiragana and katakana as well as the connectors. Since I'm Chinese I know the Kanji that's borrowed from Chinese- Of course, some meanings are totally different so I just have to remember the stuff that doesn't match.

As for listening comprehension, I'm not that great at all- On a good day I could only understand like 10% of what's being said in a drama... which is not all that useful. I could read untranslated manga much better than trying to understand untranslated TV drama.

I'm not trying to learn Japanese right now and I probably never will, but I have picked up on a bunch of the words that they use a lot in anime.
