Synopsis

Five Earth teens - Keith, Lance, Hunk, Pidge and Shiro - who become the last line of defense for the galaxy in an intergalactic battle against the evil alien force led by Emperor Zarkon.

History

Voltron: Defender of the Universe was based on the anime Beast King GoLion, also using elements from Armored Fleet Dairugger XV.
This was back in the day when American producers were more creative with the original content. The show was popular enough in the West to prompt several American led continuations namely: Voltron: Fleet of Doom(using original and re-purposed Japanese animation), Voltron: The Third Diminsion and Voltron Force.

Voltron Legendary Defender is a full reboot of the original American localization. It is produced by Dreamworks and will air on Netflix June 10th. The animation is done by Studion Mir (Legend of Korra.)

I actually just wanted to discuss this, but since there wasn't a discussion thread I had to make one myself. Thanks a lot hypothetical VLD fans. I actually wasn't sure what forum this should go in, but I went with anime out of consideration for the show's origins. Also, since Studio Mir's other work, Korra, was placed here it seems consistent with Crunchy's policies.

I actually never watched the original Voltron, it was before my time, and in any case I wouldn't assume a remake was good just because I liked the original. The primary appeal for me is the Avatar/Korra team's involvement in production. Avatar and Korra were not always perfect, but the quality was consistently high enough that I would be interested in anything they were attempting. I'm also a big mecha fan, so I am interested in the latest American take on the super robot genre.

So far it looks promising, although this team has let me down in the past. With luck it will be a fun and exciting adventure show that will hopefully last longer than one season.

So, what do you guys think? Apprehensive? Optimistic? Indifferent?

Are there any old school Voltron fans here? What did you like about the original and would you make any changes to the classic formula?

And if there are any business-savvy posters, what needs to happen for Netflix to see this show as a success?

Just like this

Ah, thank you so much! I don't know much about posting images, so your advice is very helpful.

Edit: Okay, I added your cast pictures (thank you by the way) and the picture should hopefully be an acceptable size.

Omg Rhys Darby... I'll watch just to listen to him, even if the show sucks as badly as the original hackjob.

My wife and I are both fans of the original show, but watching the uncut Golion version was a real eye-opener for both of us (nuclear holocaust, burning babies, alien cannibalism, all in the first episode!). Made me realize that the makers of the U.S. version had to do everything they could to make it fit the broadcast, since they were supposed to receive Daltanious (a much more kid-friendly show), but got Golion instead by accident.

Anyway! Looking forward to Legendary Defender. After Voltron Force, I am hoping for better this time.

Well, it's kind of World Events Productions' fault. They asked for "the one with the lion", and both Daltanious and Golion have lion robots.

I actually really wanted another series of Avatar where they've acheived space travel by the time of the next avatar. Imagine earth benders flinging meteors and piloting mechs.

That being said, I don't want that to be Voltron.

To be honest, I expect that comparisons will be unavoidable. I don't expect a point for point rehash of ATLA, but we do have a team of element based heroes fighting an evil empire, and we know that the creator's sense of humor will carry over. The most significant difference would be a focus on teamwork rather than one individual, which was present, but not a focus in Avatar and Korra.

As I said, their previous work is the main draw for me. If I did not like it, then I would be more wary.
