My criteria is as follows...
Can I make this better at home?
Can I be bothered to make this today?
I'm a great cook (I even won a TV cooking show), and so if I can make something easily and better at home for a fraction of the price... Well, it won't stop me buying it if I'm feeling lazy, but it will mean I judge it more harshly. I live alone, so sometimes it works out cheaper overall to order in some udon, for instance.
If it's fairly cheap or something I can't cook at home (Like, something fried), then I'll likely just suck it up.
I've no issue going out and blowing £40 on dinner though.

cheap food that tastes like shit is a waste of money. If you don't have a lot of money, make those nights out fewer, and spend the required money to have a good meal.
