I've largely ignored Naruto for most of its existence, I read the manga for I think around 10 or so books, but never really gave the anime much of a chance. Anyway, I've finished a lot of shorter anime and decided it might be time to try Naruto again. I'm on episode 13, which is still all covered by the manga I read, but I'm still watching to recap.

Anyway, main question, I see here (http://www.animefillerlist.com/shows/naruto) that Naruto has a LOT of filler episodes. Combined with Shippuden, I'm facing a mountain of 600 something episodes and was wondering if skipping the filler is worth it? will I miss anything important to the anime plot? do they reference fillers a lot in later episodes? do anime-only characters stick around?

forgive my novice questions, just curious before I get to the filler what I should do.

thanks!

90% of the fillers in Naruto are absolute garbage and I suggest you don't watch them, just stick to the episodes that follow the manga, they're really good. However, there are fillers that are based on source material that is considered canon in Naruto, such as Kakashi's past when he was an ANBU, but this filler only comes very late in Shippuden, so for now you're perfectly fine skipping all the filler. There is a reference to a filler arc in Shippuden in a manga episode but it is so minimal that it doesn't detract from anything else and you'll forget it very quickly.

I've moved this to the Advice, Info, Recommendations forum.

I think most of the filler was garbage, but the shorter bouts of it weren't too bad to binge through when I first started watching Naruto. Some of the filler comes in places where there's a good pause point at least and while slogging through it may get a little boring and mean you have to deal with especially trivial stories, it kind of does serve as a little bit of an okay break from main story.

Where the filler is really awful is where it's inserted in places that completely break up the pace of an arc. It's basically just a stalling tactic with no respect for the integrity of the main story. IMO, this is most grievous in Naruto Shippuden.

Of course one problem with the filler is that sometimes it's mixed in with the canon stuff in a way that you can't skip the entire episode without missing some of the stuff you probably would want to see.

I'd say, get yourself a guide to the filler, and if you start watching and are finding the filler tedious, use the guide to jump ahead.

(BTW, there is one filler episode that I particularly enjoyed -- it's in Naruto Shippuden -- episode 230)

thanks for the advice guys, I'm open to more opinions though!

based on what you guys said, I think I'll trudge along and watch the filler if its just one or two episodes at a time, but I'll probably skip the big filler arcs.

Here are some details for you:

Guide to watching Naruto without fillers:

Watch episodes 1-100.
Skip at 101-106.
Pick up at 107-135.
Skip at 135-219.
Pick up or Skip at 220 (Start the episode at 12:02. You will see a little bit of the eye burning filler so don't worry about the scenes you don't understand)

Want more information, just google or bing search "naruto filler guide" and good luck enjoying the series. Plenty of people have dropped Naruto.

Just read the manga instead of watching the anime.

Unless you wish to make this a challenge and try watchin' the entirety 'til you turn 60, I highly suggest you skip the fillers, especially the huge ones. The segments were repetitive and it takes you away from the immersive experience of the main storyline. Still, as Lorreen had mentioned on the post above, some of those filler episodes do contain canon (mayhaps their sneaky way of forcin' you to watch the rest of the garbage), so heads up.
